Lot 116

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A lovely group of four gilded silver coca spoons (also called lime spoons), used to prepare lime powder in order to enhance the hallucinogenic properties of other drugs. Each one has a beautiful zoomorphic/avian finial atop a long slender body hammered at the end to create a receptacle for the lime powder. Three of the spoons present hummingbird finials with characteristically long beaks and one presents a jaguar finial with an open toothy grin, perky ears, and a curled tail . Size: 3.125" H (7.9 cm); 3.5" H (8.9 cm) on included custom stand. Weight: 28.3 grams. Precious metal quality: 65% silver, 20% goldTo the ancients of the Pre-Columbian world, hummingbirds (picaflores in Spanish) were associated with the sun. Appreciated for shiny, iridescent feathering and aerial acrobatics, the hummingbird made for the ideal solar metaphor. Since these birds are known to hover, seemingly motionless, and fly up, down and even backwards, the ancients likened their motions to the sun's hovering in the sky at the solstices when it is also known to reverse its celestial direction. In addition, hummingbirds can assume a torpid state when it is cold at night or during brief periods in the winter. However, they come back to life in the spring warmth. This unique ability to "die" and "resurrect" signified rebirth to the ancients, precisely at a time when planting and, in this sense, "renewed life" occurred. The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. The principal Moche god Ai apaec wears a headdress adorned with a jaguar head and paws and important mortals donned similar headdresses. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery. Oddly enough, few Moche artists would have actually scene jaguars as they are not indigenous to the coast. Jaguars prefer moist forest conditions. However, scholars believe that some cubs were transported over the mountains for Moche rituals, and it is also possible that some jaguars wandered down the coast. Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany Condition: Slight surface wear to the spoons, but the forms are generally very strong. Some loss to gilt but some still remains. Silver has developed a nice patina with small areas of green patina from the copper content. Lot 116b

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Inca, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A silver kero or drinking vessel hammered into a beaker shape with a flat base and a flaring spout, skillfully decorated with an abstract visage created in repousse on one side and an anthropomorphic figure flanked by a pair of simian creatures on the other side of the vessel body. The portrait face presents bold features such as striking almond-shaped eyes, arched brows, an aquiline nose, and a slight smile. Given how he is elaborately decorated with ear ornaments and a beaded necklace, he most likely represented an elite individual. An impressive royal drinking vessel that was clearly used for more than ordinary domestic purposes. Rather, vessels like this one were used during life by royalty and after life at funerary ceremonies that incorporated intricate religious libations and imbibing rites. Size: 4.375" in diameter x 7.75" H (11.1 cm x 19.7 cm)To create this piece, the ancient metalsmith hammered a silver piece into a very thin sheet, approximately the size of the finished work. Then the artisan used fine-grained stone anvils and hammer stones made of hematite or green porphyry, sometimes with animal hide attached, and a wooden core template to create the form and its repousse ornamentation, as the metalsmith hammered the silver sheet upon the wooden template. An elegant royal Inca silver kero, comprised of pure silver that would have belonged to a king or noble and/or would have been used at sacred funerary rites. Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Ron Messick collection, New Mexico, USA Condition: Expected age wear with some denting as shown, but overall form and detail are excellently preserved. Small fissures to periphery of base. Nicks to rim. Nice patina from age and handling. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #136605

Lot 118a

Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Sican / Lambayeque, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A haunting gilded silver (87% pure) death mask with a broad face, black painted almond-shaped eyes, and a three-dimensional nose. The chin is sharply pointed and the face is constructed from two pieces of silver sheet that are held together with gilded silver "staples". Similarly, the ears and large round earrings are also held in place with "staples" - with many of the original staples remaining. Fascinatingly, two broad bands of cinnabar pigment decorate the face - one across the cheeks, just under the eyes, and the other vertical down from the nose to the tip of the chin, giving the face a colorful appearance. Size of mask: 11.5" W x 7.5" H (29.2 cm x 19 cm); size of frame: 20.25" W x 16.25" H (51.4 cm x 41.3 cm); silver is 87% pureThe mask was not intended to represent an individual, but rather a stylized deity, as all of the known masks from the region follow a very similar formula. In this way, the deceased could readily assume a godly identity. Sican elites were patrons of workshops that made fine metal objects like this, and they took their wealth with them when they passed away. Buried in mounds, these individuals would be entombed in high style. At the site of Batan Grande, for example, a single burial could include up to five masks - one on the head, and the others at the feet. Masks like the one featured here were placed in graves alongside headdresses, scepters, crowns, and ceremonial weapons. Provenance: private California, USA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, USA, acquired 15 years ago Condition: Piece has not been examined outside of its frame. Small tears to peripheries and the delicate silver sheet has been slightly crumpled/bent as shown, notably on the nose. Several of the silver "staples" that held the different components together have been replaced in modern times. In a modern frame. #145837

Lot 168c

Latin America, Mexico, late 19th to early 20th century CE. Painted on heavy gauge tin, this ex-voto depicts a woman dressed in black and white kneeling in prayer beside her husband who is sick in bed. Above to the right is the Virgin of San Juan aloft a cloud in the celestial realm with two angels holding a white ribbon above her head that identifies her in red lettering. Below is an inscription that translates, "I give thanks to the Holiest Virgin of San Juan for having alleviated my husband from sickness. For this my children and I give thanks. - Antonia Aguilera". Above the scene are two 7-pointed silver stars, and the entire composition is framed with a silver painted border. Size: 10.875" W x 14.875" H (27.6 cm x 37.8 cm); 14" W x 18" H (35.6 cm x 45.7 cm) framedEx-votos are little story paintings indicative of healing or blessing popular in Mexican visual culture. This tradition was inspired by the Greeks and was brought to the New World by the Spaniards. These votive paintings were hung in a church or placed adjacent to an image in order to celebrate and give thanks for the recovery of the donor from an illness or dangerous situation. In essence, ex-votos represent the spiritual or physical gains received by the donor. These paintings include hand painted passages that relate the details of the cure or the rescue. Typically, however, this commentary is replete with regional dialect and almost impossible to translate. Nevertheless, if you are familiar with the Spanish language, you will probably get the gist of these anecdotal paintings Provenance: The Estates of Olen Bryant and late Vanderbilt University art professor Thomas Brumbaugh, Clarksville/Cottontown, Tennessee, USA Condition: Some expected waviness and areas of staining/oxidation. Painted imagery is vivid as is the inscription. Translation of inscription on label attached to verso. Frame has a couple of scuffs, but is otherwise very good. #146774
