COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, WORLD MEDALS, TURKEY and the Ottoman Empire, and the wars against them, France and Egypt, The Opening of the Suez Canal, Silver Medal, 1869, by Louis-Oscar Roty for the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez, seated female figure holds aloft the light of Progress to the standing figure of Industry, a sketched route of the Suez Canal beyond, rev legend in centre, inscriptions around, 42mm (Divo 606; BM Acq 1983-1987 p.25, 147). Matt surface, extremely fine. Struck for the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez. Formed in 1858, French private investors were the majority of the shareholders, with Egypt also having a significant stake. However in 1875, a financial crisis forced Isma’il to sell his shares to the British Government for £3,976,582. The company operated the canal until 1956, when it was nationalised by Nasser.
COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, WORLD MEDALS, TURKEY and the Ottoman Empire, and the wars against them, Crete, Abdul Aziz (1830-1861-1876), Campaign in Crete, 1st Crete Medal, Silver (Atik Girid Madalyasi) Medal, 1869, toughra, rev panorama of the island, 36mm (Nuri Peri 1108). Pierced as usual and with suspension rings, nearly extremely fine. Minor uprisings by the Greeks in Crete had become a regular occurrence but a demand for lower taxes and changes in the court system in May 1866 meant that Ottoman troops were mobilised even though the demands were met. It was their presence rather than the original demands that caused the outright rebellion that lasted till 1869. The Ottoman Empire was able to retain its hold on Crete for another 43 years. For a silver medal for the destruction of the monastery at Arkadi in 1866, see Greek medals, lot 1826

A COLLECTION FORMED BY PAUL STEVENS, SULTANATES Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq, Gold Tanka, Mulk-i-Tilang, AH 725, titles, rev titles and single circular border, 11.03g (G&G D303). Struck on a compact flan, better than usual for this mint, extremely fine and rare, a lovely specimen. Telangana, currently a part of Andhra Pradesh, but soon to become a separate state, was ruled by the Kakatiyas at the start of the 13th Century AD from their capital, Warangal. In 1305, the army of ‘Ala al-Din Muhammad Khalji, under Malik Kafur, conducted a successful campaign to Warangal and returned with masses of treasure “too heavy for a thousand camels to bear”. During the reign of the next Dehli Sultan, Qutb al-Din Mubarak, an army under Khusru Khan again invaded Telangana and returned to Dehli with another large amount of booty. During this period, Telangana remained in the hands of the Kakatiyas but in the reign of Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq, Warangal was captured, possibly along with other parts of Telangana. The name of the capital was changed to Sultanpur and it must have remained as part of the Dehli Sultanate until at least the year AH 732 (AD 1331/2). Gold and silver Tankas in the name of Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq were struck with the mintname Mulk-i Tilang in years 724 and 725. These have a different legend from those struck at other mints during his reign. In the reign of his successor, Muhammad bin Tughluq, there is an initial Tanka issue with mint name Mulk-i Tilang, and then various issues of gold coin with the mint name Sultanpur.
A COLLECTION FORMED BY PAUL STEVENS, SULTANATES Muhammad b. Tughluq, Gold Tanka, in the name of his father, Hadrat Dehli, AH 729, titles in single square border, rev titles and single circular border, with the enigmatic number 421, 10.92g (G&G D324). Edge marks but with a complete border legend, nearly extremely fine, rare and apparently without a silver equivalent .
A COLLECTION FORMED BY PAUL STEVENS, SULTANATES Ala al-Din Husain, Gold Dinar, Victory at Kamru and Kamta, first type, Khazana, AH 900, rev legend in segmented octofoil border, 10.42g (G&G B715). Possibly ex-mount, fine, extremely rare There are four types of victory coins issued by this ruler. The first two types commemorate victories over Kamru and Kamta. The third type adds Jajnagar to the list, and the fourth type adds Orissa. While silver Tankas of the fourth type are very common, and those of the first type scarce, those of the second and third type are very rare or extremely rare as are coins of any of the four types in gold.
A COLLECTION OF THE COINS OF MYSORE Tipu Sultan, Silver Double-Rupee, Patan, AH 1198, this unusual type repeats the lower line of the obverse, where the mint is written, on the lower line of the reverse, 22.83g (KM -; H -). About extremely fine and toned, a rare type. bought Glendinings, 24 March 1977, lot 719

INDIAN, SULTANATES Sultans of Dehli, Mahmud bin Muhammad bin Tughluq (AH 752 / 1351 AD), Gold Tanka, AH 752, 11.04g (G&G D455). Very fine, a little crimped, scarce. When Muhammad bin Tughluq died after a reign of some 27 years, his army, on campaign in Sind, accepted Firuz Tughluq as his successor. Unaware of this, the nobles in Dehli raised to the throne a would-be son of the late ruler, by the name of Mahmud. When Firuz returned to the capital not long afterwards, Mahmud was set aside. Coins are known struck in his name in gold, silver and billon. The silver and billon coins are extremely rare, while the gold coins are scarce.
