Of Crimean and early nursing interest a boxed Holy Bible and book of common prayer given to Alfred Tozer by Florence Nightingale at Scutari in 1855, the Bible printed by Cowan & Company of 17 Princess Street, Edinburgh in 1853, the front cover with inscription `Alfred Tozer Fire Brigade from Florence Nightingale Scutari Hospital April 1855`, also in this Bible is a hand written list of other members of the Tozer family together with Alfred Tozers career which states that he was appointed a Fireman in London on 3rd March 1851, he left for the Crimean War on 3rd March 1855 and returned to London on 30th September 1856 where he remained until he left for Manchester on 5th February 1862 and commenced as Superintendent of Fire Brigade at Manchester on 14th February 1862 at 200 pound per annum, this salary was increased to 300 pound on June 1st 1864 then to 400 pound on 26th October 1870 then to 500 pound on 1st September 1875, the book of common prayer was printed by George John Grierson of Dublin in 1853, the inside page with inscription `Alfred Tozer from Florence Nightingale Scutari Hospital April 1855`, the two prayer books are enclosed in a leather covered cardboard box with gilt lettering `Alfred Tozer from Florence Nightingale Scutari 1855`, this lot also includes a black and white photograph of Florence Nightingale. Florence Nightingale lay the foundation of professional nursing, her work during the Crimean War greatly improved the conditions of wounded soldiers, also with this lot is a silver-plated circular salver inscribed `A present to Mrs Tozer from the 6th Carabineers at Scutari 1856`, this presumably a leaving present for the Tozers on the return to England. Alfred Tozer when in Manchester wrote a piece on a fire he attended at the Sultan`s Palace at Scutari where rats had eaten into the lead gas pipes. This lot is accompanied by some research.
