HUNTER, J. A. & MANNIX, Dan African Bush Adventures 8vo 223 x 150mm Hardcover in original maroon cloth bindings with silver title to spine in good condition, 252pp with 31 b/w illustrations. Dust jacket in good condition, with protective cover. Price clipped. A very neat and clean copy. There are some light pencil markings in the book and to the front margin. John Alexander Hunter (1887 - 1963), born near Shearington, Dumfries-shire, Scotland, also known as J. A. Hunter, was a white hunter in Africa from the early 1900s through the 1950s who led many notable safaris. He moved permanently to British East Africa in 1908, where he later led the Livermore expedition, with the aid of A.P.de K.Fourie, that opened up the Ngorongoro Crater to European hunters. He held several world records for big game at various times, and killed over 1,000 rhinos in Kenya, most of them in the Makueni hunting ground, which the Government needed to get rid of, in order to give these lands for re-settlement of the Kamba people. Besides safaris and other control operations for the Kenya Game Department, in Makueni Hunter killed 996 alone, from 26 August 1944 to 31 October 1946. It turned out that those lands were useless for human settlement. In later years, he became concerned about the possible extinction of the wildlife he had so assiduously hunted, and spoke in favour of conservation. His writings were notable for betraying his colonialist attitude, although his writings similarly betrayed a genuine respect and affection for the locales and peoples that he interacted with. Koestler, Arthur The Gladiators - (signed association copy to Alan Paton) 8vo "Koestler`s first novel, `The Gladiators`, about the Spartacus slave revolt. Edited, with a commentary, by Neville Dubow Paradise. The Journal and Letters (1917-1933) of Irma Stern 290 x 229 Neville Dubow ended his acknowledgements with: `And, finally, my homage to Irma Stern. Towards the end of her life she expressed the hope that I would write a book about her. This is the second one; it is more than a book about her. It is, in every sense, her book.` The book`s immediacy, passion and colour epitomise South Africa most highly rated painter - in 112 quarto pages, half in colour, including her 52 pp journal, `discovered, after the artist`s death, lodged at the back of a disused cupboard in the studio of her house some time after its conversion into the Irma Stern Museum`. This is a rare unmarked, mint copy - protected dustjacket, grey cloth-boards, lettered in silver to the upper board and the spine, and illustrated text on matt art.
