A very rare silver cup-hilt rapier, Spanish or Mexican, second half of the 17th Century with tapering blade of flattened hexagonal section, stamped 'De Hortuno de' and 'Aguire en Toledo' within a short fuller on the respective faces, silver hilt finely cast and chiselled in relief, comprising a pair of straight quillons each formed as a nodular branch swelling slightly towards a flowerhead tip, pierced shaped ecusson decorated with scrollwork, curved kunckle-guard en suite with the quillons and interrupted by a moulding, deep cup-guard pierced and chiselled with an elaborate arrangement of scrolling tendrils joined by stylised coronets carrying strapwork cartouches enclosing shaped escutcheons with a grotesque mask in the upper half, the lower band arranged in four segments pierced and chiselled with further arrangements of interlace scrollwork and also incorporating small grotesque masks, guardapolvo embossed with a series of pierced concentric circles, compressed spherical openwork pommel decorated with scrolling foliage en suite with the ecusson silver openwork grip lined with crimson silk and retained by an engraved collar top and bottom (the cup-guard with very minor cracks and chips), and the guard retaining its original padded crimson silk liner 102.5 cm ; 40.375in blade While the style of the hilt is clearly Spanish the absence of marks would suggest that it was of colonial manufacture. The pierced openwork decoration of the hilt is reminiscent of Mexican stirrups of the same period.

a russian Officer's 'Golden' award shasqa embellished with the badge of the Order of St. George, circa 1881-1913 with earlier non-regulation blade of watered steel, encrusted in gold on one face with a Virgin and Child medallion beneath a crown supported by cherubs, a pair of silver-encrusted votive candles below the hilt, and a pious inscription encrusted in gold Cyrillic letters along the forte, gilt-brass hilt of 1881 pattern incorporating the Cyrillic inscription 'For Bravery', the cypher of Tsar Alexander II and the gilt and enamelled badge of the Order of St. George set into the pommel, and in its regulation leather-covered scabbard with gilt-brass mounts cast in low relief with foliage 83.5cm., 32.875in blade By an Imperial order of August 10th 1913 'Golden' swords awarded for bravery were to be affiliated with the Order of St. George. The present sword would appear to have been refurbished in accordance with this order and the scabbard replaced with one of the correct 1913 pattern.

a rare scottish heart-butt snaphaunce belt pistol made entirely of steel, dated 1645 with sighted multi-stage barrel formed with four raised mouldings and flared octagonal muzzle, engraved with the date ahead of a slotted ramp at the base of the breech and inset with a small silver rectangle towards the muzzle, bevelled lock with maker's stamp ( rubbed), the pan incorporating a disc fence engraved with an expanded flowerhead and fitted with sliding cover, the cock decorated with a matching flowerhead and the arm of the battery cut with a Celtic serpentine motif ( the sear, tumbler and mainspring all working replacements, presumably early 18th Century), with slender stock cut with simple dentil mouldings along the fore-end, strongly pronounced heart-shaped pommel, slotted small ramrod-pipe, and openwork cubic trigger and pricker en suite with the jaw screw of the cock ( the belt hook, ramrod, one side-nail and the bodkin from the pricker all missing) 40cm., 15.75in The heart-shaped pommel was a regional development of the so-called lemon pommel popularised by Scottish pistol makers within the first quarter of the 17th Century. The heart-shaped pommel appears to have originated exclusively in the centres of production in the Scottish eastern lowlands, such as Inverness, Elgin, Aberdeen and Dundee.
