Jan married John Howell, a senior engineer for BT, in 1956. The pair lived in Upminster where they began collecting ceramics and buttons. They joined the Hornchurch Historical society, took part in archaeological digs at Great Baddow and Rainham and went beachcombing along the Thames at Grays. Their private collections amassed over many years and included 18th century Lowestoft porcelain, books, buckles, buttons, Studio Pottery and various other ceramics.

On her return, she lived in Withington, South Manchester with her three sisters. Here she bought a shop on the High Street called Cowsill, where she sold her hats, clothes and accessories. In the early days of Cowsill, many of her patrons arrived in horse and carriage. Mary lived a full life, passing away at 97. Her keen eye for fashion also led her to preserve a range of day and evening wear, plus shoes and costume accessories, belonging to her and her mother.
