An Art Nouveau large silver bowl, E S Barnsley & Co, Birmingham 1908, the circular body with three decorative tendril handles, terminating in out swept feet, the bowl with presentation inscription 'Presented to W H Lever Esq by members and friends of the Ormskirk Division Liberal Association in recognition of his strenuous fight for Free Trade and the people's budget as Liberal candidate for Ormskirk division at the General Election January 1910, James Bromley, President, G Oliver Jones, Chairman, J Rathbone, Treasurer, David Lesley, Secretary', 22cm diameter (excluding handles) 17cm high, weight 32oz Provenance Purchased by the vendor from Sotheby's The Leverhulme Collection, June 2001, lot 709 Lever fought Birkenhead in 1892,1894 and 1895 as a Gladstonian Liberal , on each occasion losing to his Conservative opponent. He had no ambition to be an MP but perhaps felt it his duty to help Gladstone, who he strongly supported, by being prepared to be a parliamentary candidate in seats he assumed the Liberals would not win. He went on to fight the Wirral in 1900 - losing again. Then, to his consternation, in the Liberal landslide of 1906, he fought there again and won ! He proceeded to agree with the Liberal whips that he would not resign the seat until the next General Election provided he was not expected to attend at Westminster unless specially summoned , thereby avoiding a difficult by-election for the Government. In 1910 he fought Ormskirk and duly lost to the future Lord Derby.
