DIKAIA, Obol, c. 500, head and neck of ox right, terminating in dotted truncation, rev. four-part incuse square, 0.25g (cf. Barron, The Silver Coins of Samos, pl. 5, 1a and 2 [Trihemiobols]). Good very fine; unpublished in the standard references The proposition by J.M.F. May in ‘The Coinage of Dikaia-by-Abdera, c. 540/35-476/5 B.C.’, NC 1965, p.2, that Dikaia-by-Abdera might have been a colony of Samos is substantiated by this coin and those in the following lots. They not only have a provenance from the region but also share types directly derived from Samian prototypes which probably precede the Herakles issues of Dikaia
An Oak & Pine Wall Mounted Spoon Rack, spoons, pewter cruet & pot. The shaped back above a shallow trough form shelf incorporating a spoon rack to the base pierced with triangular holders. Together with a pewter sifter, a small round pot inscribed `Royal Yacht`, a set of six silver metal spoons and three pewter spoons. 5½ ins (14 cms) high, 25½ ins (65 cms) wide, 7½ ins (19 cms) deep.
A Pair of 18th Century Silver, Giltwood & Polychrome Carved Busts of St. Barbara and St. Catarina. The head & torsos rising from scroll-crested pedestals with glazed roundel apertures framing painted name plates. 22 ins (56 cms) in height, 9 ins (23 cms) in width, 6½ ins (16 cms) in depth.
Two Early 19th Century Snuff Boxes & A Tortoiseshell Purse: A horn snuff box with a painted lid depicting a Terrier; 1 ins (2.5 cms) high, 3¾ ins x 2 ins (9.5 cms x 5 cms). A papier maché ebonised snuff box painted with a man cutting a lock of a maidens hair measuring 1 ins (2.5 cms) in height, 3¾ ins x 2½ ins (9.5 cms x 6.5 cms). The tortoiseshell purse of elongated oval form inlaid with a central silver shield engraved `AWC` and bordered by a band of mother of pearl roundels. The brass clasp opening to reveal a red silk lined interior; 1 ins (2.5 cms) in height, 3¼ ins x 2 ins (8 cms x 5 cms).
A 19th Century Percussion Pistol with a captive ram rod, and a rebrowned twist octagonal sighted barrel signed on the top flat `London`. Applied with a vacant silver escutcheon and inscribed Lt Vf Adams on a plaque. by Deanes of 46 King William St, London Bridge.
