WW2 Royal Navy Costal Forces MTB’s Royal Naval Auxiliary Skipper’s Family Groups of Medals. This is a father and son family grouping, the son James Arthur Mackintosh Sandilands serving with Motor Torpedo Boats, coastal forces before being wounded in 1942. Medal Groups comprising: Sons: 1939/45 Star, Atlantic Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, Royal Naval Auxiliary Service Medal (EIIR), “J.A.M. SANDILANDS”, Serving Brother of the Order of St.John. First five medals mounted as originally worn. The group is accompanied by a quantity of original paperwork and photographs ... Accompanied by father’s medal group, who served with the Camerons during the Great War. Comprising: 1914/15 Star (privatly named) “4088 PTE C SANDILANDS CAMERONS”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “PTE CAMERONS” (Correction to BWM), Defence Medal, Voluntary Medical Services Medal (Silver) “C SANDILANDS”. Medals loose ... Also included in the lot is a selection of post WW2 RN cloth and metal badges. James Arthur Mackintosh Sandilands a native of Glasgow joined the Royal Navy in 1941. In September of that year he was posted to HMS Attack (shore establishment) which was a Coastal Forces base at Portland. He appears to have been wounded whilst serving on MTB’s recieving gun shot wounds and was classified as unfit for Naval service in January 1944. In the post war years he enroled in the Naval Auxiliary Service and gained his Skippers certificate on the 17th June 1966. He recieved the award of a Serving Brother of the Order of St.John in 1988.

Howes RFC RC ... 1938 Dated RAF Issue Kit Bag ... Plus other items overall GC (Small quantity) 1st Air Mechanic George Howes enlisted into the Royal Flying Corps on the 1st May 1915, his trade carpenter. He was discharged in 1920 and rejoined the RAF as a Carpenter in November 1938 and was confirmed a LAC on the 23rd November 1938. The Gas Mask bag included in the lot was later used by his son who served as a Bomb Disposal Sergeant.

Badge. Indian Army. 1st Bengal Lancers Victorian waist belt plate. A scarce example comprising a heavy brass rectangular plate mounted with silver crowned strap inscribed “Bengal Lancers” set within a laurel wreath; to the centre, a silvered “1” on domed ground. Reverse shows evidence of previous device, belt hook repaired. Fixed belt loop present, detachable belt loop now absent. Originally raised in 1803 by Captain James Skinner and known as Skinner’s Horse throughout its various changes in title. Became 1st Regiment of Bengal Lancers in 1896.
Royal Artillery Victorian Officer’s Full Dress Tunic. A fine example. Blue uniform with scarlet collar and piping to fronts. Victorian buttons. The collar edged with gold cord and “Broken Bias” lace, and bearing grenades in silver embroidery. Blue cuffs edged with similar cord, traced with gold Russia braid, forming an Austrian knot above. Figured gold Russia decoration for a Captain around the knot. Plaited gold shoulder-cords, now fitted with Major’s rank crowns (post 1902) in silver embroidery. Good quilted lining. Minor in-service alterations to back, one small moth hole, otherwise near VGC ... Accompanied by a pair of overalls by Hobsons, with wide scarlet stripes, named to ‘Lt F C Fraser 1108’. One foot-strap absent, otherwise GC. (2 items)
WW1 1915 Royal Warwickshire Regiment Fuse Cap Ink Stand. This brass fuse cap has been crafted into an inkwell and mounted onto a turned wooden base. The base with a silvered presentation plaque “C/Q.M.SGT. A.M. MEASURES ROYAL WARWICKSHIRE REGT. PLOECSTEERT WOOD BELGIUM 27TH APRIL 1915” Has been polished. Company Quarter Master Sergeant Albert Merte Measures landed in France with his Regiment on the 22nd March 1915. He was discharged on the 28th August 1917 and awarded the Silver War Badge. Ploegsteert Wood formed part of the Ypres Salient.
Badge. King’s Dragoon Guards Officer’s silver cap badge circa 1896-1915. A fine and rare die-cast Austrian double headed eagle on tri-part title scroll. (as KK 734). Reverse impressed ‘STERLING’. Two stout loops to reverse. VGC Eagle adopted when Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph appointed Colonel in Chief in March 1896; discontinued 1915 as Austria had become the enemy.

Silver-plated Victorian regimental pattern buttons. Collar-badges in silver embroidery. Shoulder cords bearing three stars in gold embroidery, denoting Captain. Quilted lining. Tailor’s label to J.S.N. Snelgrove dated 1907. Medium moth and some staining Captain John Sydney Norman Snelgrove landed in France with the 7th BN on the 26th July 1915.
Boer War Yorkshire Silver Tribute Medal. A scarce silver example awarded to “23073 W. INGLE”. The obverse is embossed with a ducal coronet above a white rose of Yorkshire all within a wreath and the legend “A Tribute from Yorkshire”. The reverse with the Prince of Wales’s plumes and “3 Imperial Yeomanry Yorkshire”. Also “1901 South Africa 1902”. GC
Badge. City of London Imperial Yeomanry Rough Riders Officer’s lance cap plate circa 1905-08. A very fine and scarce silver and gilt example. Triangular gilt rayed plate mounted with silver design comprising an oak wreath surmounted by a Crown resting on a scroll inscribed “Rough Riders”; within the wreath, the Arms of the City of London. Across the base of the wreath, a four part scroll inscribed “The City of London Imperial Yeomanry”. To the left side of the wreath, a scroll inscribed “South Africa”; to the right a scroll inscribed “1900-1902”. Two screw posts to reverse. Small spilt to one ray not affecting appearance. Generally VGC

Irish. Royal South Down Militia Victorian Officer’s 1830 Box Pattern Coatee Epaulettes. A rare pair with silver bullion lace to the strap, this fitted with a Regimental button. The silvered crescent supports fine twist wire bullion tassels. The underside with crimson silk cushion and leather backing. Retaining original silvered attachment clip with details of tailor’s details of ‘W Buckmaster Latest improvements 1842’. Bullion slightly dulled. GC. Raised at Hillsborough 1797. Became 5th Bn. Royal Irish Rifles on Friday 1st July, 1881.

Mounted on a circular plate, a silver crowned ‘Bombay Native Infantry’ strap resting in a wreath; silver ‘XV’ to the centre. Scottish Queen’s Own Highlanders Drum Major’s mace. A fine impressive and scarce example. Polished wooden shaft supporting large silver plated top surmounted by a small Crown. The head is embossed with a EIIR Cypher, Seaforth Regimental device and tripart title ribbon “Seaforth”, “Q.O.H.”, “Cameron”. The shaft terminates in a 15 inch long silver plated ferrule; silvered neck band supports the two silvered chains emanating from the ferrule and crossing each other up the length of the shaft. Plating remains bright, near parade condition. The Queen’s Own Highlanders was formed in 1961 from the amalgamation of 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders and 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.

Within the oval on a raised burnished gilt backing a silver crown over a thistle spray, below the Cross a silver Sphinx/Egypt. Brace of hooks and studs to reverse which bears Kirkwood’s Thistle logo. German Third Reich NSDAP Flag/ Standard for Ortsgruppe Zeven. A fine scarce double sided example of red cotton with black swastika on white disc applied to the centre, edged with silver cord tassels on three sides. To the top inner corner on each side, a brown felt rectangle edged with light blue and embroidered with white letters ‘Ortsgruppe Zeven’ which is in Lower Saxony. One or two tiny spots of moth and minor stains otherwise generally VGC. Approx. 113 x 137 cm

Richard Simkin 16th or Queen’s Light Dragoons Watercolour Painting. A good and detailed study of an Officer of the Regiment, circa 1808. He stands full length, wearing blue and silver laced coatee, with pelisse to his left shoulder and under his right arm he carries his Tarleton pattern helmet. Clear signature colour and detail good unframed. Size 9 x 11 inches.

Dark blue melton cloth with scarlet collar, edged all round with ¾ inch gold “Vellum” pattern lace and gold cord, bearing collar-badges in gilt metal and gold embroidery. Nine gilt buttons to front and six behind. Plain blue round cuffs, edged with gold lace. Cuff-slashes, also edged with Vellum lace, with three buttons and pointed loops. Skirt-slashes edged with gold cord. Twisted gold shoulder-cords bearing Captain’s rank-badges in silver embroidery. Fine quilted drab lining. Label of John Jones & Co, St. James’s Sq. named to RG Mascall Esq 24/2/30. Near mint condition ... Complete with companion pair of blue overalls with scarlet welts down sideseams, 1935 label of same tailor to same Officer, minimal moth. (2 items) Reginald George Mascall awarded DSC Dec. 1945.

German Third Reich Government Official’s dagger circa 1939-42. A fine rare example with simulated mother of pearl grip and silver plated mounts. Eagle’s head ornamented pommel, crossguard and langet bearing an eagle and swastika, the blade unusually with no maker. Housed in its finely pebbled plated scabbard, the oakleaf bands retaining both loose suspension rings. Complete with knot or portepee. (Official Government knots were of Army pattern but smaller.) Generally VGC. Introduced in March 1939; production ceased in mid 1942.
