The von Mohl Collection: Mary Clarke Mohl (1793-1883) and Claude Charles Fauriel (1772-1844), by direct descent, a family collection relating to these two 19th century intellectuals: including a 19th century continental silver coffee pot, silver mark rubbed, maker's mark on base, side handle damaged but present, 4¾in (12cm) high, weight 6½ozt, bequested to Mary Clarke by Fauriel, engraved, 'Cafetière de la Marquise de Condorcet donnée a Claude Fauriel léguée à Madame Mary de Mohl 120 rue du Bac Paris', an original letter from Mary Clarke to Fauriel dated August 1829, two volumes of their published letters: Von Mohl, Ottmar (1846-1922), Fauriel et Mary Clarke, Correspondance de Fauriel et Mary Clarke, pub. Ottmar von Mohl, Paris 1911, Ex Libris Ottmar von Mohl, together with 'Le Roman de Claude Fauriel et Mary Clarke', half bound leather spine and corners with marbled board, and another later edition (4) Mary Clarke Mohl, also known as 'Madame de Mohl' and 'Clarkey', was an English intellectual and early feminist, known for her wit and letters; she was at the centre of British and French culture and society, entertaining the writers, artists and philosophers of the day at her 'salon' in Rue de Bac, Paris. Friends included Florence Nightingale, Thackeray, the Brownings and the Trollopes. She had a long and intellectual relationship with Claude Fauriel and married Orientalist Julius von Mohl; the silver coffee pot was given to Fauriel by his previous lover, the Marquise de Condorcet whose late husband, Marquis de Condorcet was a progressive thinker. Provenance: the vendor is directly descended from an historically important aristocratic Prussian family: Johann Jacob Moser (1701-1785) considered to have laid the legal foundations of the modern German state, whose daughter, Christine-Beate, married Karl Gottlob von Mohl; their descendants were statesmen, jurists, diplomats, botanists and intellectuals. The vendor is the great grand-daughter of Ottmar von Mohl, nephew of Mary Clarke's husband, Julius von Mohl. See Lots: 705 - 721
