Lot 290

A pair of George II cast silver sugar castersPeter Archambo, London, circa 1727 struck twice with maker's mark only to underside of bases, PA with crown aboveBaluster form, with cast applications, three vertical scroll straps within a stippled surround, also each with the engraved with the impaled arms of a Baronet ISHAM of Lamport Hall, Northamptonshire, the lower curving body with foliate swags between shell and scrolls, also within a stippled surround, similar banded decoration to the spreading foot, the pull-off covers with pierced scroll vertical bands between ribs, height 16.5cm, weight 24oz. (2)Footnotes:These are the impaled arms of a Baronet ISHAM of Lamport Hall, Northamptonshire. The assay date of 1727 suggests that the arms in the mage are likely to be for Sir Justinian ISHAM (1658-1730) 4th Baronet. He was the second son of Sir Justinian ISHAM (1610-1675) 2nd Baronet by his second wife Vere LEIGH of Stoneleigh. The 4th Baronet succeeded to the Baronetcy after the early death in 1681 of his elder brother, a victim of smallpox. In 1683 he married Elizabeth TURNOR (1666-1713) of Stoke Rochford Lincolnshire. He was succeeded by his son Sir Justinian ISHAM (1687-1737) 5th Baronet who married Mary HACKETT. The arms of the 4th Baronet's wife Elizabeth nee TURNOR are not displayed in sinister in the form expected. Which leaves the question: Whose are these arms? The assay and we surmise the engraving in 1727 is shortly before his death in 1730 and during his period as widow, his wife having died in 1713. Could the maternal arms in sinister be the arms of an unrecognised marriage? For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
