Bert Hardy, The Gorbals, Glasgow, 1948, and Leslie Mason and George Davis reunited, 1986; silver print, printed late 1980s signed in black ink with personal dedication, 'To Charlie, Best wishes, Bert', images 20 x 21.5cm and 20 x 15.4cm, mounted on one sheet 30.5 x 40.5cm.Footnote: Acquired directly from the Artist by his printer, and thence by descent. Leslie Mason and George Davis were immortalised in 1948 when Bert Hardy captured them crossing a destitute Cleland Street in The Gorbals district of Glasgow. The Gorbals had gained the unwanted label of "the worse slums in Europe", and Hardy was sent to capture images for the Picture Post. The two eight year old boys from 1948 were reunited a number of times through their lives, as in this secondary image posed in 1986. Hardy is quoted as saying of this picture " My favourite picture: this reminds me of what I was like when I was a kid. In this story I concentrated on the children, and how they kept their spirits up in conditions which were often dreadful ", Bert Hardy, My Life, Gordon Fraser 1985, pp 107.
