Lucie Duff-Gordon black patterned silk and silver thread lady's evening jacket, early twentieth century, with allover printed yellow and red flowers on a black ground interspersed silver thread flowerheads and trimmed with pale blue and pale green satin piping, pink satin lining, bearing "Lucie Duff-Gordon" label Lady Duff-Gordon (1863 - 1935 Lucy Christiana Sutherland), fashion designer and writer, created the fashion house "Lucile". She started her dressmaking business in the late nineteenth century and by 1900 the firm had become one of the great couture houses of London under the name "The Maison Lucile", providing bespoke dresses for Margot Asquith and the Duchess of York (later Queen Mary). She established branches in Paris, Chicago and New York and her work is now exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. She was one of the survivors of the 1912 Titanic disaster, when en route to do business in America, bringing her Spring couture collection.
