Wayan kulit, shadow puppet from Bali. The silver paint on the face is to shine when lit by an oil lamp. 75 x 20cm. Mid 20th c. Notes: Wayan kulit, shadow puppet theatre, is Bali's most complex and sacred art form. It is a traditional medium of moral and spiritual instruction, and it also wonderfully entertaining. An oil lamp is hung behind a screen of stretched cloth. A single puppeteer, dalang, manipulates all the puppets, often many at one time, speaking in a myriad of voices and several different languages while conducting a small ensemble of gamelan musicians at the same time.

Artist: Damien Hirst (English, b.1965). Title: "Pharmacy Panel (Gold) (2004) (4 panel)". Medium: Color silkscreen and offset lithograph. Date: Composed 2004. Dimensions: Overall size: 36 x 41 1/4 in. (914 x 1048 mm). Image size: 36 x 41 1/4 in. (914 x 1048 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed lower right. Printed with five colors and metallic gold ink. The full sheet. Fine impression. Fine condition. Backed with a conservation support sheet. Provenance: Private collection, Birmingham, England. Comment(s): A panel of wallpaper (the complete pattern). In 1997, for his restaurant called 'The Pharmacy' located at Notting Hill Gate, London, Hirst designed wallpaper (the "wall chart") based on the pharmaceutical giant Merck’s handbook endpapers, showing pills and products and describing them with their pharmaceutical titles. Merck objected and he withdrew it as an artwork of wallpaper, after he had already plastered the restaurant with silver and gold sheets of the material. Hirst's venture gained further publicity thanks to a dispute with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, which claimed the name, pill bottles, and medical items on display could confuse people looking for a real pharmacy. The name itself breached the Medicines Act 1968, which restricts the use of the word "pharmacy". The restaurant's name was subsequently changed to "Army Chap" and then "Achy Ramp" (anagrams of "pharmacy"). Initial plans to open further restaurants outside London were quietly dropped and the restaurant itself closed in September, 2003. Sotheby's dispersed its contents in 2004. For the massive Pharmacy sale at Sotheby’s in 2004, though, new wallpaper was designed and made that didn’t offend copyright laws, using biblical titles and references to biblical passages. According to “Gordon’s Photography Prices” the only auction record for a silver print of this image is $410,500 realized at Sotheby's, New York, 4/6/2011, lot #92. "Man Ray used separate negatives of a nude torso and a photographer's lamp to create this dreamscape. Shadows and reflections make the subject of the work ambiguous: the light bulb in the center could be a doorknob or a crystal ball. The piece is particularly successful in creating the illusion of three-dimensionality on flat paper." (Courtesy: Getty Museum). In recent years Cahun’s altered self-portraits (silver prints) have sold from $20,000 to upwards of $100,000. She called these deformed self-portraits with shaven head her "monstrosities," in this image her head shaped as if by an “anamorphic” mirror. Cahun, born Lucie Renee Mathilde Schwob to a prominent Jewish family, was a Surrealist photographer whose work explored gender identity and the subconscious mind. In the early 1920s she would change her name to the gender neutral Claude Cahun. Speaking of her self-portraits the photographer famously said, “Under this mask, another mask. I will never be finished removing all these faces.” Image copyright © The Estate of Claude Cahun. [24908-2-600]
