An exhibition quality 3 ½ inch gauge model of a Great Western Railway 4-4-0 County Class tender locomotive No 3834 County of Somerset, built by Mr D R Carter of Minehead, Somerset, to the design by Don Young. The silver soldered superheated copper boiler by G. B. Boilers having fittings including pressure gauge, water sight glass, regulator, safety, drains and other usual fittings. The chassis having twin outside cylinders, Stephenson’s link valve gear with slide valves, lever reverse with multi-lever quadrant, fluted motion, injector, clack, safety, steam brake, whistle valve and mechanical oiler system. The model finished in traditional Great Western Railway dark green and black lined livery with fitted steps, hand-rails, lamp irons and detailed rivet work. The six wheel tender with coal compartment, fitted brake, hand operated water feed pump, opening tool boxes, steps, hand rails, firing tools and coupling. The model is finished to a high standard having been run on compressed air only and is displayed on a track and contained in a ‘Timbercraft’ glazed display case with polished brass builders plaque. A well-engineered 3 ½ inch gauge model of a two foot gauge 2-4-4 Forney, based on locomotive 7 preserved on the Edaville Railroad in South Carver, Massachusetts. Silver soldered copper boiler, 80 psi working pressure, twin injectors with crosshead and hand pumps. Fittings include pressure gauge, “push-pull” American style throttle, water gauge and pole reverser. Chassis with twin cylinders, slide valves operated by Walschaert's valve gear, mechanical lubricator. Length 152cm. Width 39cm. Height 55cm. Boiler History: Boiler number N57-80-279. A well-engineered live steam 5 inch gauge model of a L1 Class Southern Railway 4-4-0 tender locomotive ‘Maid of Kent’ No 345, built by the late Mr F Wainwright of North Wales to the design by LBSC, with silver soldered parallel round top copper boiler having super-heater and fittings including pressure gauge, water sight-glass, regulator, direction control, brake, drains, simulated planked flooring to cab, clack and safety valves. Chassis having twin inside cylinders with Stephenson’s valve gear, cylinder drains, fluted motion and injectors. Six wheel tender with fitted water hand feed pump, brakes, water cock, steps and hand irons. The model finished in Southern Railways green lined livery with fitted steps and hand rails. Length 152cm. Cab width 24cm.The model described in Model Engineer Volumes 97-101.* The locomotives were used on express trains on the South Eastern main lines from London to Dover, Ramsgate and Hastings They remained on these duties until the mid-1930s when they were gradually replaced on the heavier trains by the newer ‘King Arthur’ and ‘Schools’ classes. They continued to be used on the former London Dover & Chatham main line to Dover and Ramsgate until after the Second World War and the nationalisation of British Railways in 1948. The transfer of Bullied ‘Light Pacific’s' to these services in the early 1950s made the class largely redundant. Some were briefly transferred to Eastleigh and to replace worn out locomotives on cross-country services, but most spent their careers between London and the Kent coast. Withdrawal began in 1959. A fine Kingscale Gauge 3 live steam streamliner model of a LMS Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 tender locomotive No 6227 ‘Duchess of Devonshire’, the silver soldered copper boiler being gas fired and of multi-flue design with fittings including pressure gauge, water sight-glass, regulator and folding cab-side doors. Other features include cylinder drain pipes, sprung axles, axle pump, hand pump and lubricator. The model built in 1/22 scale and finished in crimson and gold lined livery. Total length 103cm. Chassis with twin outside cylinders and operated by Walschaert’s valve gear, cylinder drains and fluted motion. A six wheel tender having fitted hand feed water pump, steps, hand rails and couplings. The model is finished in black livery with fitted steps, hand-rails, lamp irons and vacuum hoses. Length 89cm. Cab width 13cm. The London Midland and Scottish Railway Class 5 4-6-0, almost universally known as the Black Five. It was introduced by William Stanier in 1934 and 842 were built between then and 1951. Members of the class survived to the last day of steam on British Railways in 1968, and eighteen remain in preservation.No Boiler History available.
