North America, ca. 1840 to 1900 CE. This is a collection of two daguerreotype and ten tintype photographs. Daguerreotype was the first publicly available photographic process, created by rubbing a sheet of silver-plated copper with fumes to make its surface light sensitive and then exposing it. The image was made visible by fuming it with mercury vapor, and then it was treated with liquid chemicals and dried before being enclosed behind glass to protect. The two here are both clear and in original protective frames. One is of a child with a strikingly serious gaze and the other is of a young woman with her elegant clothing clearly visible. Unlike any other photographic preparation, daguerreotypes give the impression that the image is floating inside of the metal upon which it is imprinted. The tintypes, meanwhile, are from the next phase of photographic technology. They replaced the daguerreotype by the 1860s because they could be made in a matter of minutes. People out at fairs or carnivals could often have their photographs taken and receive the images shortly thereafter. The colleciton here shows several portraits of individuals in protective sleeves, a couple, a family of four, a well-dressed man standing in a beautifully decorated room, and an older man seated outdoors. Size of largest: 3.3" W x 3.75" H (8.4 cm x 9.5 cm). Provenance: Ex-Historia Antiques, James Caswell, Santa Monica, CA. Condition: All have some wear and fading; the one inside the covered frame has its binding broken, but both pieces are present. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111734

Byzantium, ca. 1000 CE. This is a lead token from Byzantium with religious decoration. Lead tokens played a major role in the medieval economy, and particularly in the Holy Land, where they were used as currency in the Crusader Kingdoms. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: The token has small clips taken out of the sides and some dirt encrustation, but the decoration is clear. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Lot 349

Eastern Roman Empire, Byzantium, Byzantine, ca. 14th century CE. A bronze cast figure depicting the Archangel Michael valiantly holding two of his traditional attributes, a sword and spear. Silver inlays once adorned his belt, garment, and possibly weapons. As Chief Commander of the Heavenly hosts, Saint Michael bravely challenged the Devil. Satan, after all, was Michael's opponent in the battle for Heaven. The figures' gestures and motion are characteristically pantomime-like, and his form with the exception of his visage is largely flat. Both of these stylistic elements are hallmarks of Byzantine art. A fine example! Size: 3.25" W x 4.75" H (8.3 cm x 12.1 cm) Provenance: Ex-Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: Losses to feet and lower terminus of left hand. #111591

Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: All four have patina to varying degrees; the silver cross is delicate and easily bent. Lot 55

Eastern Roman Empire / Byzantium, Byzantine, ca. 13th to 14th century CE. A white alabaster relief carving of Jesus's visage set within a silver pendant. Christ's face is rendered in the manner of Russian icons depicting Christ Pantokrator or Christ as Savior with Cyrillic letters inscribed on his nimbus. Framing the relief carving, the silver setting displays wonderful artistry with a tightly twisted rope pattern surrounding the bezel and three pairs of small silver spheres accentuating the left, right, and bottom of the composition. Finally, a loop at the top end makes this piece stunning example of religious wearable art! Size: 1.5" L x 1.25" W (3.8 cm x 3.2 cm) Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: Minor bending to bezel and expected tarnish. Otherwise intact and superb. #111533

Lot 78

Byzantium, ca. 9th to 13th century CE. This is a collection of small crosses from this period, each with unique and interesting decoration. One is silver. These objects were made at a time when tremendous effort and innovation went into producing art with Christian themes. Items like these would have been owned by individuals, some of them probably acquired from artisans at key stops along the road on a pilgrimage. One particularly interesting thing to note from this collection is the range of copper alloys used to make these objects; melting down of objects to form new ones was a common practice in this time period and this likely accounts for differences in alloy ratios. Sizeof largest: 2" L x 1.75" W (5.1 cm x 4.4 cm). Provenance: Ex-Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: All have patina and wear. The silver cross is easily bent. #111560

Lot 79

Europe, Austria or Hungary, ca. 1400 to 1425 CE. An original medieval illuminated manuscript on animal parchment cut from an early 15th century Choirbook.  The page is adorned with an elaborate historiated initial "R" surrounded by a vine border.  The lower interior depicts three guards asleep at Christ's tomb.  Beneath them are the Three Marys arriving to find that Christ is Risen.  Along the left of the initial is a column surrounded by heavenly clouds.  The initial is illuminated in burnished gold and tempera colors.  The vestiges of music display square notes on a four-line stave.  The missing section probably portrayed the Risen Christ. The scale and ornateness of a manuscript reveal much about both the status of the manuscript and its owner. Manuscripts intended for everyday use or use by students or friars usually possessed very little illumination, and rarely ever elaborate historiated initials. By contrast, manuscripts that were commissioned by wealthy patrons or for an elite monastery oftentimes possessed gold or silver illuminations, historiated initials, and other flourishes. Clearly, this sumptous example replete with layered iconography an refined decoration, was intended for a special patron. Size: 8" L x 6.25" W (20.3 cm x 15.9 cm); in mat 14" x 12" (35.6 x 30.5 cm). Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL; ex Goodspeeds Bookstore, Boston, MA Condition: The historiated initial "R" had a portion excised a long time ago which was placed with a piece of old animal parchment.  A closed tear along the lower right. Some minor creasing as shown.  Nevertheless, a wonderful example. #111501

Lot 80a

Russia, ca. 15th century CE. This is a silver traveling icon showing the Christ child held by the Virgin Mary and surrounded by presumably St Joseph, shepherds, and the Three Wisemen; the artwork has many small details. This style of icon is known as a "travelling" icon, which could be carried by priests. The 15th century was a crucial time in the development of Orthodox Christianity in Russia; holy figures such as Sergius of Radonezh and Metropolitan Alexis helped the country to withstand years of Tatar oppression, and to expand both economically and spiritually. Size: 4" W x 5" H (10.2 cm x 12.7 cm). Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: Expected wear as shown. #111531

Lot 85

Russia, 17th to 18th century CE. This is a white metal -- possibly silver -- reliquary on a chain with intricate carved detials and a scene of two apostles and Christ on a throne, all reading from books and scrolls. Reliquaries were used to hold small relics, like saints' bones or pieces of the True Cross; smaller ones like this may have also been made to hold soil from pilgrimage sites. This probably belonged to a religious individual and may have been passed down through a family. Size: 9.3" L x 2" W (23.6 cm x 5.1 cm). Provenance: Ex-Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: Some tarnish; lid is slightly stuck open; artwork clear. #111593
