English Civil War An Act touching the Moneys & Coyns of England July 17th 1649. The Act whereby Parliament removed the coinage containing the King’s head and replaced it with new coins of both Gold and Silver each bearing the motif of the Commonwealth – a cross palm and laurel with the words ‘The Commonwealth of England’ and on the reverse a cross and harp with the words ‘God with us’.
William III – Captain Kidd the Pirate The Trial of Captain William Kidd at the Old Bailey for Murder and Piracy upon the High Seas and of Nicholas Churchill James Howe Robert Lamley William Jenkins Gabriel Loff Hugh Parrot Richard Barlicorn Abel Owens and Darby Mullins for Piracy May 8th and 9th 1701. Published as part of the five volume set of State Trials and providing a verbatim account of the trial in fine condition. Large folio. The story of Captain Kidd the most notorious of all the Pirates was legendary. He was originally appointed by William III to capture pirates he then turned pirate himself and on his final return to England he was arraigned before Parliament and eventually sent for trial. He was sentenced to death and was hanged on May 23rd at ‘Execution Dock’ Wapping – the hangman taking two attempts to hang him because the rope broke at the first attempt. His body was then gibbeted and left to hand in an iron cage over the River Thames as a warning to future would be pirates for the next 20 years ! His fame as a pirate lived on however particularly the legend that he had plundered a fabulous treasure which he had buried on an island in the Caribbean – and it was this very treasure which Long John Silver and Jack Hawkins were looking for in Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’.
