A George I silver two handled porringer cup, plain body with S scroll handles on stepped base, the underside engraved with initials E*H., the body later engraved: THE GIFT OF THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LATE HENRY COAPE ESQ TO THE CONGREGATION OF PROTESTANT DISSENTERS AT DUFFIELD 20TH AUGUST 1778., hallmarked by John Wisdome, London, 1726, approx 8.60 ozt (267.4 grams), approx 9.5cm high, 9.5cm diam Provenance: Friargate Unitarian Chapel Derby Note: Friargate was founded about 1650 and the 1698 chapel which stood next to the Friary Hotel on Friargate on the corner of Stafford Street was the oldest Nonconformist Chapel in Derby. It was Presbyterian certainly at the time the communion cups were made. It only became Unitarian in about the 1780s. Finally it was demolished in 1974 and replaced by ground floor hall in the student accommodation in Stafford Street. Further details: marks good, date letter slightly rubbed, dent to foot rim, dents to body
A pair of George III silver candlesticks, Corinthian capital above plain columns chased with husk banding, square base chased with ribbons tied swags and paterae between, detachable drip pans, hallmarked by Robert Makepeace & Richard Carter, date letter K for probably Sheffield,1786, town mark overstruck, each approx. 32.5cm high. Further details: The makers Richard Carter and Robert Makepeace were London silversmiths albeit they were both from the North of England, they often bought in items from Sheffield and then had the marks over-struck at the London Assay Office. In the case of these candlesticks it is possible they did not submit them to London Assay Office and thus the marks are Sheffield ones and it may be that they decided to “disguise” when in haste to pass them on for sale? Condition: overstruck marks, some scratching, tarnishing, wear and signs of usage to parts.
