A Victoria silver medallion - the Folkestone, Hythe and Sandgate medal for the rescue of the crew of the Benvenue 11th Nov. 1891, awarded to Albert Moore, 46mm diameter and with later medal suspension and blue ribbon Note: The violent gale which swept the coast of Kent and Sussex on the 11th Nov. 1891. The iron sailing ship Benvenue (2033 tonnes laden) with a general cargo and bound from London to Sydney, ran aground off Sandgate, Kent. The valiant attempt to reach the Benvenue by the Sandgate lifeboat, the The Meyer de Rothschild was unsuccessful the lifeboat being overturned in the surf and one man killed. Attempt to reach the wreck by rocket apparatus was similarly unsuccessful. The Dover life boat was with difficulty launched and headed for the scene, but in the meantime a scratch crew from the coastguard men and fishermen from Folkestone and the surrounding area were gathered together and were able to launch a lifeboat. In heavy seas and with great difficulty the wreck was reached and a rescue was accomplished. Able seaman Albert Moore assisted the Captain of the ship who was one of the 27 survivors. Sir Edward Watkin a director of the South Eastern railway made monetary awards to the rescuers and decided that a medal should also be awarded. His wife undertook the design of the medal, the dies of which where prepared by Sir Alfred Gilbert (1854-1934). The medals were manufactured by Heming & Co, London and were presented on 1st January 1892 by the mayor Mr. S. Penfold. And with copied paperwork of full report of the rescue
