The mine inspector's report states 'Great courage and presence of mind were displayed by the overman and others who twice descended in the cage through the flames and rescued some men who were in a semi-conscious condition'. The date of the presentation is ironic as it was the date that David Harris, one of the rescued men, died of his injuries.
