A George III silver circular salver by Robert Jones I, London 1782, with a beaded rim, on three bead outlined bracket feet, engraved with an armorial hung from a tied ribbon within a flowering foliate wreath, 23cm (9in) diameter, 468g (15.05 oz) Provenance: From the estate of Christopher and Rosemary Warren The arms as seen blazon as: ....., three bends wavy ..... There are a number of possible families: GODSCHALL (azure-argent), ISBERY or ISBURY (argent-sable), LUTTON (argent-gules), PATER (argent-gules), WILBRAM (argent-azure), WILBURCHAM (argent-azure) as well as the PATER or PAYTER (argent-azure) family of Suffolk. Two of which can be eliminated: LUTTON (arms granted 1809) and PATER (arms granted 1811). Sold together with a sales guarantee from S. Kozminsky & Co. of Melbourne dated March 1st 1933 and a watercolour and pen and ink heraldic description of dubious import.

A George II silver vase shaped caster by John Chartier, London 1733, with a bell shaped finial to the pierced and panelled domed cover with bayonet fixing, a moulded central girdle, on a moulded foot, engraved with the arms of a bishop, 18cm (7in) high, 323g (10.4 oz) Catalogue Addendum Coincidently Dreweatts have a portrait of Bishop Benson by John Vanderbank, dated 1732 (lot 25, The Collection of Sir William Whitfield CBE - Part One, 10th March 2020) Provenance: From the estate of Christopher and Rosemary Warren These are the assumed arms of Martin BENSON (1689-1752), Bishop of Gloucester (1734-1752). Blazon: azure, two keys in saltire, the wards upwards or (See of GLOUCESTER), impaling argent, on a chevron sable three cross-crosslets fichée of the field (BENSON) under a bishop's mitre. Martin Benson was born into a clerical family at Cradley, Herefordshire the son of Revd. John Benson the rector there. He was educated at Charterhouse School and later Christchurch, Oxford. In 1721 he was appointed Archdeacon in Berkshire, 1724 Prebend of Durham Cathedral, 1726 chaplain to the Prince of Wales, 1727 rector of Bletchley. In 1728 during the Royal visit to Cambridge he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity and in 1734 was translated to the See of Gloucester, where he remained as Bishop until his death in 1752. From 1735 to 1752 he carried out major repairs and alterations to the cathedral. He was later buried there. He married the sister of Thomas SECKER who was later the Archbishop of Canterbury. Lancelot Blackburn, Archbishop of York (1724-1743) left Martin Benson as a bequest in his will a service of silver plate. Ï’A George III silver shaped oval three piece tea service by Henry Chawner & John Eames, London 1796, the tea pot with a lobed oval ivory finial to the domed cover, a wooden loop handle, a straight-tapered spout, foliate and shaped fringe bands, trellis panels, engraved with a shield and a crest within mantled reserves, 28cm (11in) long, 1029g (33.1 oz) gross Property from the estate of the late Betty, Lady Grantchester.The paternal arms are those of the HOUSON or HOWSON family of London, granted in 1605. The Blazon: quarterly argent and sable, in the 1st and 4th quarters a pellet, in the 2nd and 3rd a plate (HOWSON) - impaling - argent, three lions heads erased; crest: out of a cloud proper a bull's head azure, semée of estoiles or (HOWSON) The Houson or Howson family are poorly documented and there is no recorded pedigree for them despite the grant being during the times of heralds' visitations. H. G. Bagshawe Esq.' The inscription engraved on the mirrored plateau reads 'Presented to W. H. G. Bagshawe Esquire, QC, by many grateful shareholders of the British Nation Life Assurance Association rescued by his able advocacy before the Court of appeal on the 28th of January 1878, From Threatened Unlimited Liability for the Engagement of the British Commercial Insurance Company'.The crest and motto for BAGSHAW and BAGSHAWE.Provenance: Presented to William Henry Gunning Bagshawe, QC (1825-1901); anonymous sale, Sotheby's, 10 February 1983, lot 201.

A silver large rounded rectangular twin handled tray by Elkington & Co., Birmingham 1913, with foliate loop handles, a raised gadrooned rim with foliage, shells and masks at intervals, engraved with a fox hunter taking a leap and 'Yoiks', presentation engraved beneath, 75cm (29 1/2in) long, 5006g (160.95 oz) The inscription reads: Eric Frank O'Hara Maxwell on the occasion of his marriage and in memory of many cheery bachelor days sometime back now and far away. From A. N. K.Eric Frank O'Hara Maxwell was born in Simla, Bengal, India on 5th September 1873 to William Edward Maxwell and Lillias Grant Aberigh-MacKay. He died on 14th April 1929 in Kensington, London.He was third son of Sir William Maxwell, British Resident of Selangor and acting Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1893-94, was educated at Cheltenham College and Bedford Grammar School. He came to Singapore in 1894 and was articled to Messrs. Drew and Napier. Later he practiced as an advocate and solicitor in Ipoh, and founded the legal firm of Maxwell and Kenion, with Arthur Noel Kenion (the A. N. K. of the inscription). He retired in 1909. He married Ethel, daughter of Colonel Hale, and had one son.Provenance: Bought at the auction of The Philip Kaplan Collection, Johannesburg, 26th and 28th November 1962 by Richard R. The blazon: a dragon's head erased gules, collared and chained or. This is assuming the engraver has taken some licence in creating the crest (possibly because the design is small).

The blazon: a lion, rampant or (HUGHES) - emparlée - or, a lion rampant sable, on a chief gules a label of five points argent (DAMPIER); crest: a lion couchant or (HUGHES)
