Dr Christopher Dresser (British 1834-1904) for Elkington & Co, a silver and ivory 'Claret or water jug' with hinged cover,Mark of Elkington & Co (Frederick Elkington), Birmingham hallmarks 1885, base stamped Elkington & Co, 17559, Rd.22870,Having an angled and elliptical neck with hinged cover and turned ivory finial with incised parallel lines on the edge, the globular silver body raised on a short stem and circular, spreading foot, the angled handle centred with a short section of ivory carved with repeated twin parallel lines, with part gilded interior,23.5cm high; approximate weight 20.3oz, Literature: Michael Whiteway, Christopher Dresser 1834-1904, with a text by Augusto Morello, published by Skira, Italy, 2001, p.165, pl.198 and back cover illustrates a similar form jug, but silver-plated rather than silver, and with slight variation to the finial and handle. The silver jug presented by Roseberys has two slender silver support strips on the underside of the ivory element to the handle that the silver-plated version in the book does not have and the finial on the Roseberys jug is more delicate, repeats the linear decoration from its handle and is attached to its cover by a silver stem. Also, illustrated in the book on page 167 is a detail from a page from Elkington's silver pattern book, 1885, which shows the drawing of the jug, numbered 17559 and annotated with it's registration number 22870. Next to the jug are two other known Dresser jugs numbered 17556 and 17557 respectively and also annotated with their respective design registration numbers of 22872 and 22871. In the Register for designs, recorded 2nd March 1885, in the National Archive at Kew there is a group entry for Elkington and Company “22870 – 2”. The description reads "Design for a Claret or Water jug applicable to both pattern and shape." There are individual representations corresponding to the three numbers in another volume devoted to the representations and these are similar to those in the Elkington pattern book. IVORY: Finial: the finial has some crazing to the top and there is a tiny loss at the top where the silver comes through the centre. A few marks. The incised lines look to be coloured and there are some losses to the colour. Handle: some fine hairlines along the grain. There is some discolouration in keeping with age and use. Most of the colouring that would have been in the grooves is gone.SILVER: there is a shallow indentation on the front edge of the cover, at the lip, with some tiny abrasions, this corresponds with similar tiny indentations, texturing and abrasions on the lip of the neck and the underside of the lip. Some occasional fine abrasions on the cover and neck. The hinge is good and stable. Handle structure good. There a few tiny indentations on the body with some occasional random abrasions on the body and foot. There is natural wear to the underside of the foot rim in keeping with age and natural use. The interior has residual gilding on the inside of cover, lip and neck. There are no traces of gilt to the globular part and dirt and residue evident. Overall the jug is in good condition and presents well. Please note that this lot contains ivory. Ivory is an endangered material with very strict rules about export/import. If you plan to take this lot out of the UK please check with your shipper or Country regulations that you can before bidding. Some countries do not allow the importation or exportation of ivory. A Bill has come into law in the UK, effective from the beginning of June, that limits the buying and selling of ivory.

The name Anoakia was created from the first two letters of Anita, the oak trees on the land, and the last two letters of Arcadia.Anita Baldwin (1876-1939) was the daughter of Elias Jackson ‘Lucky’ Baldwin (1828-1909) and both were significant figures in the history and development of Southern California. Not least in establishing Arcadia as a City and Lucky Baldwin became its first Mayor. Anita was an independent and philanthropic woman who inherited a love of animals from her father and when she built her home she also established a breeding farm for livestock and purebred horses. She also established the Anoakia kennels. The California Poppy is the State flower of California and an article in the Pasadena Star News, dated April 5th 1916, has the headline “California Poppy is used as a trophy Design by Mrs Anita Baldwin. Granted copyright by U.S Government to owner of Anokia (sic) Kennels.” The article goes on to say: “The California poppy is the design of the trophy, the flower forming the bowl, while the stem is in the shape of the leaves.
