A Large size 17th century gilded silver and gemstone set button.Smugglers buttons like this one do not come up often. Another example like this one was consigned to us for the April auction this year by the same consignor, but that example was a medium size, this LARGER size is the largest we have ever seen and in incredible condition. This example, like the one in April is set with several garnet stones and baroque pearls and is very heavy. The center part unscrews from the shank to reveal a secret smuggling compartment. I have always been told by engineers do not unscrew these because the fineness of the screw if it gets stripped you will never be able to re-thread the screw and that would be a shame. The posts of the screw are delicate. Issued: DIVISION 1=PRE 1918 AND DIVISION 3 IS AFTER 1918Dimensions: SM=Less than 3/4", Medium=3/4" to 1 1/4".
