The document described it as follows: "a little figure in silver of a peasant with his hat and a staff, leaning upon his staff" (Una figuretta d'arg(en)to di un villano co(n) Capello co(n) bastoncino che sappoggia il su il bastone) Cf Giambologna 1529-1608: Sculptor to the Medici., Avery, Charles & Radcliffe, Anthony, published by UK: The Art Council, 1978. The earliest casts tend to be distinguished by having an oval base the figure stands on- together with clearer definition and space in the execution of staff and cloak. This later cast is closer to examples such as the one found at Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire (NT 515066) but lacks the careful stippling and detailing.Condition Report: The whole presenting quite dirty- has been in a cupboard for some time. It has been suggested that originally, they were used to bring home water and oils from the wells and lams burning in the sanctuaries visited along the pilgrimage routes. carry home water or oil from the lamps that burned in the sanctuaries visited.
