An elaborate red and blue silk theatrical robe, Chinese, 19th century, with densely embroidered cloud collar and fringing, large Phoenixes in floss silks to rear sleeves and striped sleeve bands with couched gold threads, 132cm, 52in from rear neck to hemThe Metropolitan Museum of Art has a similar example within it's collection, believed to have been worn by a performer playing a princess or a palace concubine, accession number 30.76.12a, b. CONDITION REPORT: Good condition overall - colours are good although slightly faded in places, not immediately obvious. First layer of cloud collar would have had silver embroidered edges which have eroded. A couple of tiny soil marks to turquoise collar band left side.
