Lot 130

Circa 222-235 A.D. A contemporary pair of clay coin dies used to manufacture coin forgeries, the working faces depicting a gold aureus or silver denarius of Emperor Severus Alexander, with incuse and reversed legends; each counterfeit die with inscribed numbering to verso [(((( LXIIII = 64]; accompanied by a clay crucible excavated at the same time with inked inscription to the underside: 'Arch.-Nr. / 6612-1975', another object that would have been required in the casting process of manufacturing of fake coins. Cf. Poey d’Avant F., ‘Roman Coin Moulds’, in The Numismatic Chronicle (1838-1842), June, 1838 – April, 1839, Vol. 1 (June, 1838–April, 1839), pp.147-165, fig.1, p.165, for similar; Hall, J., Goodburn Brown, D., ‘Faking it – the evidence for counterfeiting coins in Roman London’ in The London Archaelogist, summer 2015, pp.123-127, fig.3-4-5. Exhibited in 'Monetary History of 2600 Years, Monetary Values Yesterday and Today', Library Faculty of Kamp-Linfurt, Stadsparkasse Duisburg, January 1994. 86.86 grams total, 44-58 mm (1 3/4 - 2 1/4 in.).In a private collection of Roman objects since 1975. Accompanied by a copy of a letter and schedule addressed to the Director of the Library Faculty of Kamp-Linfurt, a branch of Stadsparkasse Duisburg regarding the loan of the forger's die and crucible for exhibition, dated 13 December 1993.Towards the end of the 2nd century and the early 3rd century A.D. the quality of Roman coinage began to be altered. Probably from the beginning of the reign of Severus Alexander, forgers were tacitly allowed by the Roman government to issue counterfeit coins. There are many ancient coins of this emperor that appear to have been cast in moulds. Most of these moulds would have been employed by forgers, and the dies were normally destroyed quickly after use in an effort to dispose of the evidence. [3]

A., Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Finds From Suffolk, East Anglian Archaeology 84, Ipswich, 1998; Blackburn, M., Viking Coinage and Currency in the British Isles, London, 2011; Fern, C. Dickinson, T. & Webster, L., The Staffordshire Hoard: an Anglo-Saxon Treasure, London, 2019, items 657, 672, 673. 14.43 grams, 51 mm (2 in.).Found whilst searching with a metal detector on 1st May 2022 on a Romano-British site in Cambridgeshire, UK, by Trevor Singleton. Accompanied by a handwritten letter from the finder. Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.CAM-D819F0 and workflow review page where it states: 'There is evidence that the bar fragment has been cut from both ends, suggesting Early Medieval (Viking Period) parallels.'This ingot was declared under the Treasure Act and subsequently determined by the British Museum to be of 'undiagnostic' date and therefore returned to the finder. Trevor Singleton maintains that it was recovered from a known Romano-British site, while in neighbouring fields Early Medieval (Late Saxon & Viking) items have been recovered and logged with the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Ingots of gold and silver were regularly produced in the Early Medieval period when trade took place between monetised economies (Anglo-Saxon England, Francia, Frisia) and their non-monetised neighbours in southern Scandinavia (West, 1998; Blackburn, 2011). Ingots were a convenient means of storing wealth which could be converted into display items (weapon fittings, clothing fasteners, tableware) or used to gild silver and bronze items (Hårdh, 1996).

This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.11578-198980.Elaborate silver strainers, such as this present example, were used at symposia and festive occasions for the purpose of preventing the dregs of wine from entering the wine cup. This and other related silver utensils became popular in the later 4th and 3rd century B.C. These highly decorated wine strainers were fitted with dual handles forming loops in the shape of twisting animals, here a swan. Usually they took the form of a shallow dish complete with four rings of perforations in the centre in order to drain the wine. Strainers of this type were used to separate out sediments which could be found in the thick Greek wine. Examples similar to this one have been found in royal tombs in northern Greece, as well as the tomb of a monarch in Sudan. Lot 225

UNITED KINGDOM. Elizabeth II, 1952-2022. Silver 5 pounds, 2019. Royal Mint. Proof. The Queen depicted as Una and the Lion was a controversial design issued at a time of great uncertainty. Victoria had only just turned 18 when she became Queen and Empress of the world's leading empire at the time, with dominions scattered around the globe. All eyes were on her to deliver the huge task of leading the empire to future prosperity. The depiction of Victoria as Lady Una, calmly directing the enormous beast by her side, the Lion (representing England), was a clever analogy, using the characters from Edmund Spenser's poem The Faerie Queene (written in 1590). It was the first time in history a British monarch was depicted on a coin as a fictional character. As part of the Great Engravers series the coin offered here has caused equal amounts of admiration and frustration due to the low mintage and low-profile marketing from the Royal Mint. The mintage being just 225 pieces, it was immediately sold out and shortly thereafter coins were selling for multiples of the issue price on the secondary market. The Una and the Lion design is perhaps the most iconic of all British coin designs. The original 5 Pound piece struck for Queen Victoria in 1839 has been one of the best performers of all British investment coins but its performance now eclipsed by its modern version, leaving most collectors with little chance of ever getting one. This will be one to keep for the future.Fifth, crowned head of Queen Elizabeth II right; JC below; ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · FID · DEF · 5 POUNDS ·.
