A FINE SCOTTISH SILVER AND STEEL FLINTLOCK DRESS PISTOL BY MARSHALL OF EDINBURGH. With a 17.5cm four stage barrel with a flared octagonal muzzle, profusely engraved centre and fluted section, the steel and silver body similarly decorated with a small image of a game bird in a landscape to the underside. The handle with twin vacant oval cartouches and 'rams horn' terminal with central ball, mounted to the left with a finely pierced and engraved belt hook. The action with button trigger, the cock with decorative pierced disk, ramrod lacking. Signed to the side plate Marshall & Sons 87 George Street, Edinburgh. 25cm. A SILVER MOUNTED HOLSTER PISTOL BY RICHARD WILSON. An 18 bore flintlock holster pistol with silver and silver gilt mounts. The 9 1/2" barrel cast with a military trophy. The flintlock action partially gilt and similarly decorated, engraved 'Wilson', the walnut stock with decorative silver mounts throughout with military trophies and foliate decoration. 17" (43cm) overall length.
AN INDIAN DEPARTMENTAL COMMISSIONERS UNIFORM. The uniform of Edward Selwyn Hoernle as Department Commissioners for the Bihar and Orissa Region. Comprising tail coat and trousers, the coat with elaborate silver thread collar, with a nine button front, the cuffs similarly decorated, the reverse with a central radiating foliate motif between further buttons and blind pocket flaps, the trousers with a broad gilt stripe with running oakleaf and acorn design. With a Pith Helmet with gilt tassel to the left and decorated chin strap, the interior with a label 'Waterproof Tropical Helmet' and a dress sword with 78cm blade and gilt handle. Edward Selwyn Hoernle (6/9/86 - 16/8/36) was born in Persia, his mother dying in child birth he was raised by his aunt, Educated at Winchester School and New College Oxford. He is recorded as a Lieutenant in the 1st Volunteer battalion of the Royal Hampshire Regiment with a seniority date of 28th July 1906. He took the civil service exams (Oct 19 1910) and entered the Indian Civil Service arriving in India on the 30th of November 1910. He moved to the Bihar and Orissa district in 1912 as acting under secretary to the government. Marrying Mabel Eden in 1913 the marriage to be later annulled. During the First World War he served from June 1917 as a Second Lieutenant (temporary Captain) 13/6/17 to January 1919 with the 2/90th Punjabis. From the 20th May 1920 he is recorded as a Lieutenant in the Chota Nagpur regiment. From 1924 he became the Department Commissioner for the Bihar and Orissa Region. He died of stomach cancer during a return journey to Great Britain on the 16th of August 1936, he was buried at sea and has a memorial in Gussage All Saints Churchyard.

A SILVER VESTA CASE TO AN OFFICER IN THE BORDER REGIMENT. A silver vesta case of rounded rectangular form engraved 'Bridekirk Parish, Lieut J. Hayton M.C. Border Regt. 1914-18. Hallmarked for George Unite & Sons, Birmingham, 1919. Joseph J Hayton was a temporary Lieutenant in the Border Regiment serving with the 1st and 2nd Battalions. His Military Cross was gazetted on the 3rd March 1917, An extract from the Border Regiment history is included 'on New Years eve a patrol of three went out under Second-Lieutenant J.Hayton and came suddenly face to face with two of the enemy. Young Hayton's revolver had slipped round his belt and he was unable to draw it, but with ready presence of mind he 'drew' his pipe and pointed it threateningly at the head of one of the enemy who murmured 'Kamerad', put up his hands and was taken prisoner ...' p2194. 55x45 mm.

TWO GREAT WAR PAIRS, ONE TO AN OFFICER. A first World War War Medal and Victory Medal named to M2178386 Private S.D. Reynolds of the Army Service Corps (lacking ribbons) and a similar pair named to Captain J.S. Davies, possibly Joseph Sydney Davies of the Royal Field Artillery. With a Mafeking 1900 silver fob. Private Sydney D. Reynolds was one of nine children to William Reynolds and Catherine Jones. According to the family there were seven brothers, one died in the Great War, another served with the Worcesters and was awarded an MC. Captain Sydney Davies was one of eight born to Joseph Davies and Mary Jeremiah. A copy of a photograph of the recipient is included with this lot.

A GREAT WAR GROUP OF FOUR TO THE ROYAL ENGINEERS. A First World War group of four comprising 1914-15 Star named to Cs Mjr G. Knight R.E. 28934, War and Victory medals to WO Cl2 G. Knight, and Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal named to Sjt G. Knight. Records show that George Knight served from 11/3/95 to 5/6/18 being discharged due to sickness at the age of 52. He was awarded the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1913, and Silver badge number 395042. 4 medals.
A FAMILY GROUP OF FIRST AND SECOND WORLD WAR MEDALS. A Great War pair comprising War and Victory Medals named to 6812 W.J. White 3 Lond R. mounted as worn, the victory medal silver plated, with cardboard box and envelope, silver wound badge and silk card. Walter James White from Hounslow enlisted on the 12th December 1915 and was discharged on 20th February 1919 when he was awarded a silver wound bade number B136849 (at this time he served with number 253297). He is recorded as being wounded on the 3rd of November 1916 and entitled to a wound stripe. With Second World War medals comprising Italy, Africa, 39-45 Stars and War Medal, with a ribbon bar with rosette to the Africa ribbon and RAF Cap badge in cardboard box named to W.D. White 106 Lindbridge Road, Birmingham.
A MILITARY MEDAL GROUP TO THE LANCASHIRE FUSILIERS. A Great War Group of three Comprising Military Medal named to 201335 Pte A. Walker 2 Lan.Fus, War and Victory Medals named to 3570 Pte A. Walker Lan Fus. Albert Walker, from Bury, is recorded with two numbers with the Lancashire Fusiliers,3570 and 201335. He is recorded as being wounded on 11th August 1918 and entitled to a wound stripe. His Military Medal for Bravery in the Field was gazetted on 11th June 1918, Issue 30743 p7015, a 'Spring Offensive' action at Fampoux, east of Arras. Walker was under the command of Lt Cassidy when defending a flank the men were ordered to hold their position against vastly superior numbers, their trench was under continual bombardment and attack however their actions saw that the attack was repelled. For his part Walker received the Military Medal, sold with a small quantity of photocopied research including an extract from the War Diary. 2nd Lt Cassidy was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for the action on the 28th March for continually encouraging and rallying his men under the most difficult circumstances. His medal is part of the Ashcroft collection. Sold with a silver Lanashire Fusiliers fob.

A German NSDAP Long Service Cross for 25 years service, cross pattee with a central raised eagle with wings outstretched, gilt against a veined white enamel ground, the reverse with the legend 'Loyalty to Leader and People', on a ring suspension with red and silver ribbon, 43x43mm. Probably a post Second World War example.
