Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette was a French nobleman and is regarded as a hero of the American War of Independence. He was a close friend of Washington, Hamilton & Thomas Jefferson. The monument was unveiled in 1917 by Marshall Jofre of The French Army and René Viviani, Prime Minister of France during the first years of World War I.
