A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the ivory guards deeply carved with scrolls and flowers, the gorge sticks featuring two panels, each with chinoiserie figures and drooping trees. The velum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, is painted with delicate sprays of various English wild flowers and leaves, namely the dog rose, auricula, daisies, roses and buds, cornflowers and the pasque flower. The verso is equally well painted with a full-blown pink rose, and buds, a rope supporting four more varieties of spring flowers. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm. Together with a second ivory fan, a very slender 18th century example, the upper guards delicately carved with shells, the lower section plain but carved and shaped so as to present an interesting stepped design when closed. The plain cream silk (?) leaf is edged in silver. Guard length 10 inches or 25.5cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: . Both very good, clean.
The New Caricature Dance Fan for 1799: a slender bone fan, the double paper leaf plain cream to the verso. The recto is printed with musical scores along with the Dance title, to include "The Duke of York at Valenciennes", "The Royal meeting", "Trip to Dunkirk" and "Brighton review". Under each score, in tiny script, instructions on how to actually perform the dance. The top border of the leaf shows couples engaged in dancing, some the most unlikely of partners in many ways. Central to the bottom border, the printer's details, including the date of Nov 10th 1798. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm CONDITION REPORT: . Very obvious grain to the bone. Lower guard broken down by the rivet and small section missing. Very slight loss to the silver border at each side, otherwise quite clean and really quite good for the age and type of fan.
A Circa 1830's Wood and Horn Fan, the monture having wood guards dyed black, clouté with silver metal and overlaid with white mother-of-pearl. The gorge sticks, of pale horn, are lightly pierced and also clouté with silver metal. The double paper leaf is printed and hand coloured to both sides, the recto a charming scene of a family stroll in the park, a young girl being amused by play with a toy balloon, in chinoiserie style, the basket holding a live animal, possibly a monkey, and a formally dressed male doll. The fashion of the day is particularly well represented. The verso shows a gathering of hopeful young ladies beside a bethroned Cupid, pleading for his favours with offerings of flowers. Underneath the depiction is a printer's reference, "Bellville N 33". Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . The leaf has suffered, probably from humidity, as it feels dry in places. To the outer leaf, damage to the leaf where two folds may have been stuck together at some point. Seen from the verso, some old repair to the last 2 folds. Good strong colours, and the monture appears sound.
The Wedding Day Surprise! A Circa 1830's Horn Fan, the monture lightly pierced and clouté with silver metal, the upper guards being enclosed in gold metal with relief in the form of flowers. The recto shows a rather surprising scene of a bride in her white finery, looking rather distressed, within a group of well-dressed friends in the grounds of a castle. A maiden or servant girl holding a baby is on her knees seemingly beseeching a gentleman, presumably the bridegroom, to take notice of the infant. He in turn appears to be holding a quill pen at a table. To each side a well-dressed gentleman appears to be in liaison with young ladies of the servant class. The verso shows a maiden, accompanied by an older lady, in the garden of a simple cottage dwelling, a large country house in the background. A young man is keeling before her presumably asking for her hand. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . The monture appears generally good but lacking a few of the silver metal dots. A few pin holes can been seen top centre of the leaf. Some folds are rubbed, and several need to be re-secured. Some slight splitting to upper folds, some of which have seen restoration in the past
Three Fans: The first, circa 1890's, a large painted fan with double paper leaf, a restful scene of a courting couple seated in a clearing, the lady holding possibly a book, her beau leaning in closely and attentively. The pink Mother of Pearl monture is plain, fitted with a gold metal loop and elaborately knotted cream silk tassel. The verso is plain. Guard length 12.5 inches or 32cm. Together with an early 20th century bone fan, the monture lightly carved and pierced, the double leaf being painted with flowers to the cream silk satin recto, the cotton verso being plain. Fitted with an embossed and shaped metal loop and a cream silk tassel decorated with gold thread. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. Finally, an early 20th century sequinned fan, the gauze leaf mounted on gilded celluloid, further piqué with silver dots. The sequins embroidered in swags and ribbons in rose gold and silver. The verso is plain. Guard length 8.25 inches or 21cm. Together with Romance in the Countryside: two fans, the first early 20th century, printed on fabric in the Watteau style, with wealthy and grandly dressed couples gathering in the grounds of a large country house, at leisure. The bone monture is gently incised and gilded. Guard length 7.25 inches or 18.5cm. A mid-19th century bone fan, the monture carved, pierced, and gilded, the double paper leaf lithographed with winged cherubs mingling with a group of ladies and gentlemen, the central figures having made a floral garland being used by one cherub as a swing. The verso is plain. Guard length 10.5 inches or 27cm (5) CONDITION REPORT: . 1890's fan: Good colour and painting. However, the leaf has damage to the left side, where two folds have been slightly damp and stuck, thus tearing when opened. The paper to fill the hole is present, still stuck. One tiny pinhole noted nearer the centre bottom of the leaf. The monture and tassel are sound. The satin fan is slightly crumpled with one pale mark right of centre near the top border. The backing fabric on the sequin fan is splitting but the recto is sound. Fan 4, two of the folds are slightly strained but holding. The earlier fan has damage, the leaf having a bad split to a fold at the left, some upper leaf crumpling, and the middle section of the upper guard is missing, this accident having also dislodged the first stick in.
A Novelty Cigar Cockade Fan, from the outside appearing as a genuine cigar, with red and gold label bearing the name of "B. Perez Mendez El Guajiro", the lid pulling up to reveal a cream paper cockade fan, simply painted with fresh pink flowers and green leaves. Together with a second cockade fan, this time comprising two simple sticks covered in black leather, caught together at the bottom with a metal catch, opening to reveal a shaped black fabric leaf painted with swathes of gold, silver and ginger. The verso is plain. Height when opened 12.25 inches or 31.5cm. Thirdly, an Italian olive wood souvenir cockade fan of the type produced in Sorrento, late 19th century, this example painted with a bird in flight and "Ricordo" (souvenir), a mirror inset into the verso. On pulling the upper cord a cockade paper fan emerges, with a light design of flowers and a scrolling border. The leaf retracts when the lower cord is pulled (3) CONDITION REPORT: . All appear in good serviceable order with smooth actions.
An Elegant Circa 1900 Sequin Fan, the monture of white Mother of Pearl, with bone ribs. The cream net leaf is overlaid with cream silk, cut so as to provide form for the silver sequins and spangles, embroidered in columns and swags. Contained in an unlabelled cream card fan box. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm CONDITION REPORT: . Good. One- or two-minute brown marks. The box is scuffed but serviceable.
Three 19th Century Wood Brisé Fans, to include a small example painted with roses and leaves. Guard 7 inches or 18cm; a larger carved and pierced example clouté with silver metal and featuring attractive lattices; and another similar, the piercing contained to the upper sections of the fan, both approx. 9 inches or 23cm. Together with a bone fan, the monture carved and pierced, the cream silk leaf painted with a lady in pink robes filling a jug with water from a fountain. The verso is plain. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm; and a circa 1907 paper fan printed with medieval characters, the leaf mounted on plain wood sticks. Copy of a fan painted by the Princess Royal for Queen Mary. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm (5) CONDITION REPORT: . Fan 2 has been repaired behind 3 of the sticks. Fan 4, the lad's face is blackened; fan 5 has a small tear.
