A Pair of George II Silver Candlesticks, by Walter Brind, London, Probably 1759, each on shaped circular base, with gadrooned border and stamped with foliage, flowers and rocaille scrolls, the tapering stems similarly decorated, with tapering socket, filled, the bases and stems later drilled for electricity, filled, approximately 33cm high (2)A set of four candlesticks, by the same maker and of the same date were sold Sotheby's, New York, 6 June 2001. Like the present pair they had weighted bases and were 33cm high. Sotheby's notes that they were based on a model by Girardon for the Place Louis-le-Grand.Each is fully marked on the base. The nozzle on one is detachable and is marked with maker's mark and lion passant only. There is wear to the marks on the base. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The filling material inside is becoming detached and loose in place. There are bruises overall, particularly noticeable to the edges of the bases. The nozzle of one is fixed by the later metal mount for the electrification and the top is detached from the base. The other nozzle is detachable but has a solder repair attaching the top and bottle of the nozzle. a hole has been drilled through the stick to accommodate the fitting and the sticks are raised on later brass bun feet.
