RAMC”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, MID Oak Leaf, “COL.”. Campaign group remains mounted as worn. Colonel William Lewis Gray CMG. was born in 1864, after being educated at Edinburgh University he was appointed a Surgeon of the Army Medical Staff on the 5th February 1887. He is confirmed at the Relief of Chitral and for his services in South Africa he was Mentioned in Despatches on the 2nd April 1901. At the outbreak of the Great War he was serving in India and was posted to France landing on the 4th September 1915. He remained there until the 12th January 1917 when he was posted to be the C.O. of The Royal Herbert Hospital Woolwich. His announcement of the C.M.G. appeared in the London Gazette on the 1st January 1917 and was Mentioned in Despatches on two occasions. Having attained the age limit he retired from military service on the 21st October 1921. He died of pneumonia in November 1924.

Royal National Lifeboat Institution Silver Medal For Brooke, Isle of Wight 1916.Awarded to “BENJAMIN JACOBS VOTED 11TH FEBRUARY 1916”The citation for the award:To Benjamin Jacobs, Recipient was Coxswain of the Brooke, Isle of Wight Lifeboat, which was launched on 4th February 1916, during a South-westerly gale, to the barque “Souvenir” of Tvedestrand which was totally wrecked to the S.E. of Brooke. Owing to the heavy seas the lifeboat could not get alongside, and the crew of nine of the barque, with lifebelts, had to jump overboard. They were picked up by the Lifeboat, but several soon died of exhaustion. The manner in which Coxswain Jacobs handled the Lifeboat was reported as deserving great credit, as the wreck was lying in comparatively shallow water where the sea is studded with rocks, great courage and perseverance being displayed”Benjamin Jacobs was born at Brooke in 1860. He joined the Brooke Lifeboat crew and in 1892 was appointed Coxswain replacing John Hayter who had held the post for 32 years and had been awarded the Silver Medal with three Clasps. At the time of the rescue Jacobs was 56 years old and had held the post for 24 years the Barque “Souvenir” was Norwegian of the crew a Steward died of exhaustion and the Master refused to leave his ship, his body was found the following day.

The initial issue in 1901 was 36 awards, with 18 later awarded. In 1912 the design of the medal was changed but proved unpopular with King George V and design was again changed in 1914. Victorian Royal National Lifeboat Institution Silver Life Saving Medal Bude North Devon.A Victorian Silver example awarded to “MR THOMAS BATE VOTED 7TH APRIL 1881”. Contact marks, suspension slack.Thomas Bate Coxswain of the Bude Lifeboat received the award for his gallantry on the 31 December 1880: The Bude ketch Stueley, was on passage from Mumbles to Bude with coal, she was wrecked in squally weather on Bude breakwater, North Cornwall . Mr Bate and his crew saved the crew of three men by means of lifelines and a hawser. Thomas Bate was a native of Bude being born in 1835, and as a Mariner by trade volunteered for the Bude Lifeboat. In 1865 he was involved in the rescue of a Spanish crew from the brig Juanito of Bilboa, which was totally wrecked in a heavy gale five miles north of Bude. For this action he was presented with a vellum scroll and a gold medal of honour from the Queen of Spain . In 1877 he succeeded as Coxswain following the death of the previous Coxswain Thomas Maynard who was drowned when the lifeboat capsized.

Victorian Royal National Lifeboat Institution Silver Life Saving Medal Poole Dorset.A Victorian Silver example awarded to “MR RICHARD STOKES VOTED 7TH SEPTEMBER 1882”. The citation for the medal:“On his retirement, in acknowledgement of his long and gallant services from 1865 when the station was established. He took part in services to the brigs Antares and Contest (1867), the lugger Augustine (1868) and the ketch William Pitt and the ship Martaban (1874). Sixty three lives were saved by the lifeboat Manley Wood during this period.”Mr Richard Stokes was in 1814 and was appointed the first Coxswain of the Poole Lifeboat “Manley Wood” in 1865. He was also appointed Master of the Harbour Lights. He died in March 1886 after suffering a heart attack, his coffin was carried by shipmates of the Coastguard, who also fired rockets over his grave in tribute. This is the only R.N.L.I. medal of any type awarded to an enrolled R.N.L.I. crewman of the Poole Lifeboat.

Centrally a Maltese cross bearing circlet inscribed ‘Gurkha Rifles’ with crossed kukris surmounted by the numeral ‘8’ to centre. Four screw posts to reverse, complete with backing plate. Slight service wear. GC44th Gurkha Rifles became 8th Gurkha Rifles in 1901. Service in India, Mesopotamia and Egypt in the Great War, India, Burma and Dutch East Indies during the Second War.

Comprising: Africa Star, “8th Army” Clasp, Italy Star, Territorial Efficiency Medal, “TPR. R. TKS”. Medals contained in boxes of issue. ... Accompanied by a small quantity of original photographs and ephemera. Leading Seaman Harold Victor Hurst was born in 1887 and joined the Royal Navy in 1904 as a Boy 2nd Class. He held various pre war posts including sea time. In 1912 he was transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve at Davenport. Recalled at the outbreak of the Great War he was posted to HMS Highflyer, which was tasked with hunting down the German armed merchant cruiser SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse which she did and sank off the coast of Spanish Sahara. Hurst received £3-11-5 in prize money for the action. Joining HMS Warspite in April 1915 he would be present with her at the Battle of Jutland. He received his final discharge in March 1919. Trooper Harold Hurst was born in Bristol in February 1918, he joined the Royal Tank Regiment in March 1939. He embarked for the Middle East in May 1942 and also saw action in Italy, with the 23rd Armoured Division, operating with Sherman Tanks (photographs included). He was discharged on the 29th October 1945.

The sprays bear Crimean honours, the arms of the cross bear the other numerous honours of the Brigade. To the base of the wreath, an applied scroll inscribed ‘The Prince Consort’s Own’, ‘Peninsula’ and ‘Lucknow’ above. Four screw posts to reverse, retaining original backing plate. Imperial Yeomanry Tribute Silver Pocket Watch MC, DCM Winner.A rare example, presented to Captain Frederick John Downey MC., DCM, who served with the 14th Co. Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War earning the DCM and during the Great War was commissioned into the 24th (1st Tyneside Irish) Bn Northumberland Fusiliers. The silver pocket watch, is signed to the face “Jacob Hall Chester Le Street”. The interior dust cover is engraved “TRANSVAAL WAR 1899, 1900 & 1901 CHESTER LE STREET & PELTON FIELDS TRIBUTE TROOPER F. DOWNEY 14TH CO IMPERIAL YEOMANRY FOR HIS SERVICES AT THE FRONT”. Silver Hallmarks for Chester 1900. Overall GC watch appears to be in running order.Captain Frederick John Downey MC., DCM was born in Pelton Fields. He volunteered for service with the 14th Company Imperial Yeomanry on the 1st January 1900 and landed in South Africa on the 2nd February 1900. He was awarded the DCM (LG 27th September 1901) for services in South Africa and returned to the UK on the 12th June 1901 and was discharged shortly afterwards. At the outbreak of the Great War he once again volunteered and was selected for a Commission in the Northumberland Fusiliers joining the 24th (1st Tyneside Irish) Bn. He landed in France in June 1916, and within the month had been wounded. He was therefore not with the Battalion on the 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Returning to the Battalion he was wounded on two further occasions and on the 1st January 1918 was awarded the Military Cross. Surviving the war he returned to the family business and died in 1952.

To each breast nine double loops of gold bullion lace of Guards pattern. The post 1953 anodised buttons are arranged in three groups of three. The collar is with gold bullion lace and overlaid with silver bullion thistle device. The sleeves are with eight inverted chevrons of Guards pattern lace. To the right Cuff a four-bar one-inch gold lace chevron inverted denoting the rank. The interior is with quilted cotton lining. Scarlet and Bullion remain bright and fresh. Wings absent.

Victorian Wiltshire Yeomanry Colonel’s Full Dress Uniform.A rare and very good example, the tunic of dark blue melton cloth with scarlet facings to the cuffs. These with elaborately decorated with silver lace, the collar with a double row of silver lace. Silver shoulder cord with Victorian bullion crown rank insignia and regimental button. To the front six plaited silver gimp cord drop loops to each breast. Concealed hook and eye fastening and loop and olivettes fastening. The tunic is edged with silver bullion cord and to the interior quilted lining. Silver bullion remains fresh. Minor age wear.

English Lord Lieutenant’s Full Dress Scarlet Tunic. A good 1921 dated example for a Lieutenant of an English county. Scarlet cloth with, dark blue facings, and white piping to front and slashes. Collar edged all round with ¾ -inch silver “Oakleaf” lace. The cuffs edged with a double row of 1 ¾ inch lace. Three-pointed scarlet slashes, edged with silver lace, on sleeves, skirt slashes also edged with lace. Complete with silvered buttons. Complete with shoulder cords with gold bullion Rose device. The interior with quilted lining and tailor’s label this with ink name “Col W Thomlinson” Dated October 1921. Overall GC some surface moth dulling to silver bullion and scarlet.

To the front of the the crown a replacement cockade, on the band, a blue and silver cockade; skull and crossed bones now absent. Black pressed fibre peak (loose and restitched), calf leather sweatband (stitching AF). Cream silk lining with some wear.

WW2 Italy The Rank Insignia of General Pietro Maletti. This rare grouping of Italian Military Insignia was acquired by Lieutenant-General Sir Reginald Arthur Savory, KCIE, CB, DSO, MC, following the death of General Pietro Maletti at Nibeiwa Camp, near Sidi Barrini on the 9th December 1940. The insignia includes bullion General’s cap badge ... silver bullion rank indicating General, plus other items. The badges are accompanied by a typed letter on “Sir Reginald Savory” printed paper, stating how he acquired the badges and presented them to Mr Hugh King in August 1974. The letter is signed. The grouping is now attractively framed and glazed for display.General Pietro Maletti, a veteran of the Great War was in 1940 given command of a special ad hoc grouping of motorized infantry and tanks which was called the "Maletti Group". He took his command into Egypt and on the 9th December the British Attacked as part of Operation Compass. Sir Reginald Savory Commander the 11th Indian Infantry Brigade which was deployed in the Western Desert and took part in Operation Compass. The accompanying letter describes how he acquired the badges, following the attack on the camp, when he was undertaking a mopping up operation, his Indian servant appeared from a sand storm, wearing the Italian General’s greatcoat and cap, however the servant appeared to be more pleased with the two dead chickens that he pulled from the pocket of the greatcoat. Later one of his Staff Officers cut off the badges and presented them to him. Hidden away until 1974 in his hand he wrote “I have pleasure in presenting them to my friend H King 3 South Court Street, Farnham Surrey”.

Housed in original case, the fitted interior with simulated black velvet and cream silk, the lid impressed with silver outline of the award. Award with little finish, case with service wear.

‘Gallipoli Star’ Turkish War Medal 1915 in silver by Sedlatzek, BerlinA fine silver and enamelled German Officer’s private purchase breast star by Friedr. Sedlatzek, Berlin. Silver five pointed red translucent enamelled star with balls to the tips. Mounted to the centre, a silver crescent enclosing the Sultan’s cypher and date attached by rivets. Vertical pin to reverse. bears maker’s details and impressed ‘900 Silber’. VGCOttoman Empire award for gallantry in battle instituted by the Sultan Mehmed Reshad V on 1 March 1915. Awarded for the duration of World War I to Ottoman and other Central Powers troops including many German Officers.

German Third Reich. SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler Officer’s sword circa 1934-36 by WKC.A fine and very rare example carried by an Officer of Hitler’ Personal Bodyguard. Heavily silver plated lion head pommel with green glass eyes, ornate backstrap, oakleaf ornamented knuckle bow and ferrule, crossguard terminating in further lion’s head; obverse langet wear integral SS Sigrunen, reverse with LAH cypher. Plated 81 cm plain slightly curved blade with single fuller, bearing WKC knight’s head logo on the ricasso, housed in its black enamel painted scabbard with single loose suspension ring. Very minor service wear VGC.Note. From 1934 until 1936 SS Officers were permitted to wear a variety of swords similar to the Army but with silvered fittings in place of gold. In 1936, the more familiar SS Degen sword was introduced and all Officers were required to wear this pattern.

German Third Reich TeNo Officer’s dagger by Carl Eickhorn, SolingenA fine rare example with simulated amber twist grip and silver plated mounts. Circular cog wheel ornamented pommel, crossguard and langet bearing an eagle and cogwheel swastika, the double edged blade bearing maker’s squirrel logo, TENO eagle and swastika and issue number 1374. Housed in its plated pebbled scabbard, the throat with matching number, with both lined bands retaining loose suspension rings. Minor service wear. German Third Reich Government Official’s dagger by Carl Julius Krebs, Solingen circa 1939-42.A fine rare example with simulated mother of pearl grip and silver plated mounts. The grip fitting far better them Alcoso or Eickhorn made examples. Eagle’s head ornamented pommel, crossguard and langet bearing an eagle and swastika facing same way as pommel, the blade etched with maker’s oval crowned K logo. Housed in its finely pebbled plated scabbard, the oakleaf bands (which show slight verdigris leeching onto scabbard) retaining both loose suspension rings. Toned externally, blade bright. GCIntroduced in March 1939; production ceased in mid 1942.

Mounted on the base of the sprays, a silver scroll ‘The Middlesex Regt”’. Three loops to reverse. Minor service wear. VGC

WW1 Imperial German Lippe Officer’s Pickelhaube.A good example, the black leather skull retains a good shape with squared peak and is mounted to the front with a silvered Prussian State plate with rose and star Lippe mount. National and State cockades support silver chin scale strap and to the crown a lightly silvered spike with perlring on cruciform base secured by four stars; silvered backstrap. The interior with leather sweatband and two part upper cotton lining. Minor shrinkage to front peak, rear peak slightly bent. Minor service wear. VGC

To the left spray applied silver scrolls inscribed ‘Talavera Vittoria’; to the right ‘Albuhera Peninsula’. Across the base of the sprays ‘Abyssinia’. Ornate ‘3’ over ‘DG’, to voided centre Complete with backing plate. Three screw posts to reverse. VGC

76th Regiment of Foot Victorian Officer’s shoulder belt plate circa 1848-55.A good scarce example. Seeded gilt rectangular plate with raised burnished edges mounted with large silver facetted rayed Maltese cross bearing gilt sprays of laurel, and palm surmounted by a crown on ‘Hindoostan’ scroll. ‘Nive’ below. To the centre, a silver elephant over LXXVI. Below the sprays, a gilt scroll inscribed ‘Peninsula’. Centre replaced resulting in surplus holes to reverse which bears two hooks and two studs, otherwise VGC.Became 2nd Bn. Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment 1.7.1881

Bedfordshire Light Infantry Militia Victorian Officer’s shoulder belt plate circa 1852-55.A good scarce silver on copper rectangular plate mounted with cut silver star in turn mounted with a gilt crowned strung bugle ‘18’ lodgedbetween the cords. Beneath the bugle, a gilt scroll inscribed ‘Bedford Light Infantry’. Reverse retains original two hooks and two studs. Two surplus holes to reverse. Some restoration. GCBecame 3rd Battalion The Bedfordshire Regiment on 1st July 1881.

Rectangular gilt plate mounted with cut silver Grand Cross Star of The Most Honourable Order of the Bath; mounted on the star, a gilt crowned laurel sprays superimposed on a Maltese cross; to the centre, within a pierced circlet ‘Bedfordshire’. ‘16’ on a blue enamel ground. Reverse retains original fixings, comprising two hooks and two studs. VGC
