Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A heavy solid silver Thor's hammer amulet, also known as Mjolnir. The hammer has repeated impressed motifs of tiny V's that look like a flock of birds; the upper part of the hammer is pierced for suspension. Size: 1.5" L x 1.3" W (3.8 cm x 3.3 cm); 12.9 gramsSmall Thor's hammers were worn as religious amulets throughout the Viking era, usually made of silver and usually hung on silver chains. Some even made it to the Christian era - there is a famous example of a Thor's hammer amulet from Fossi, Iceland, that has been turned into a cross. Interestingly, they were also invoked this past summer to describe the power of the surprisingly mighty Icelandic football team at the Euro Cup. The important Viking metalworking shops correspond to their great trading ports and proto-urban centers - Birka, Helgo, Sigtuna, and Lund in Sweden, Ribe, Haithabu (Hedeby), and Fyrkat in Denmark, and Kaupang and Trondheim in Norway. Silver was the principal currency of the Viking world, which stretched from Russia to northern Canada at the height of their influence. In many places, the Vikings kept silver not as coins, but as jewelry, a wearable currency form that was not subject to the authority of a monarch or mint. Provenance: Ex-M. Jones collection, York, England Condition: Tarnish and slight deformation of shape at the edges. Cord used for suspension in photo is not included. Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1400 CE. A silver kero or drinking vessel comprised of sheet silver, hammer-molded to form a drinking cup depicting a stylized human/bird head with bold repoussé facial features and coiffure, having a flared headdress adorned with a band of circular motifs, perhaps representing corn kernels as fermented corn beer or chicha was and continues to be a favored beverage in Peru, framed by diagonally striated registers, the flat rim with a finely incised cross-hatched design. Size: 4.125" W x 9.25" H (10.5 cm x 23.5 cm)On the back of the figure's head are two corn cobs modeled in relief, another detail that suggests this beaker was used for ceremonial chicha (corn beer) ceremonies, and that the figure may represent the corn god. A similar example is illustrated in "Rain of the Moon: Silver in Ancient Peru" (Metropolitan Museum of Art, p. 53, ill. 25) The kero form was also created by Huari and Inca cultures as well as other peoples of the ancient world. However, the indigenous of Peru created these for more than domestic purposes. Rather they were used during life and after life at funerary ceremonies that incorporated intricate religious libations and imbibing rites. To create this piece, the ancient metalsmith hammered a silver piece into a very thin sheet, approximately the size of the finished work. Then the artisan used fine-grained stone anvils and hammer stones made of hematite or green porphyry, sometimes with animal hide attached, and a wooden template was used to create the form and its repoussé ornamentation, as the metalsmith hammered the silver sheet upon the wooden template. Provenance: Ex- Neil Becker collection, Harrison, NYC, Ex J. Carpa collection, ex Sotheby's Condition: Silver sheet shows bending, several small losses, tears, and expected tarnish as shown. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. England, Rothschild Estate, ca. 1816 (oak box) & Birmingham, 1902 (silver tray). Remarkable keepsakes rescued from the Titanic, an oak box with a personal inscription, containing an informative note and a sterling silver heart shaped pin tray embossed w/ 5 seraphim amidst clouds, w/ a Birmingham mark, made in 1902. In addition, a limited edition leather-bound Titanic Collector's Set (Canada Post Corporation, 2012). Size: 3.875" L x 6.875" W x 3.625" H (9.8 cm x 17.5 cm x 9.2 cm) (box) Silver tray weighs 15.7 grams and measures 2.5"L x 2.5"W x .375"H (6.35 cm x 6.35 cm x .95 cm). Inscribed on the side of the box is the following message, "1816 from Oak Grown on Rothschild Estate, Buck R." Inside the box, a typed note written by C.F. McDougal states, "This oak box was made from a tree on the Rothschild Estate in England and was aboard the Titanic when she sank." McDougal continues, "Elizabeth Mellenger had been a governess for the Rothschild family. She and her daughter Madeleine (Mann) were rescued and this box and a small sterling heart shaped pin tray were on board. Madeleine Mann gave me this box and the pin tray when she and her husband sold their home in Ridgeway and moved back to Toronto to be closer to their children." Complementing these keepsakes is a limited edition leather-bound embossed Titanic Collector's Set with a Certificate of Authenticity attached to the inside back cover, numbered 09655 of 10,000 telling the tragic story of the Titanic from a Canadian perspective (very apropos as the box and tray was given to C.F. McDougal by Madeleine Mann when she and her husband were moving back to Toronto. It includes an authentic International Mercantile Marine Company (White Star Line) stock certificate, ca. early 1900s, five commemorative stamps issued by Canada Post, including an over-printed full pane of domestic-rate stamps exclusive to this collection, along with an international-rate souvenir stamp sheet, two Royal Canadian Mint Titanic commemorative coins, including the limited-edition silver-plated coin (only 15,000 pieces struck in total), and a set of three postcards (as listed on the Certificate of Authenticity). Whether you are a serious collector of Titanic memorabilia or a novice just beginning your collection, do not miss the boat (please excuse my dark humor), rather, do not miss the opportunity to "dive in" and acquire these collectibles from the shipwrecked RMS Titanic. And if this history alone is not enough to entice you, perhaps the fact that the box was made from a tree on an estate of the elite Rothschilds, comes with the informative note delineated above, bears an endearing inscription on the side, and was on the person of a Rothschild family governess who was dramatically rescued from the shipwreck with her daughter, will be.According to the current owner, "These two artifacts came from the estate of Cameron McDougal of Fort Erie Ontario. Mr. McDougal was a neighbor of Titanic survivor Madeleine Mann (Mellenger). Elizabeth Mellenger was the mother of Madeleine who was employed by the Rothschild family as a Governess. She and Madeleine (age 13) left England on the Titanic to work for the Colgate Family in the USA. The oak dressing box was made from wood on the Rothschild estate and contains a Birmingham sterling pin tray hallmarked 1902 which was given to Elizabeth Mellenger by the Rothschild family. These two items were in the possession of Elizabeth Mellenger when she and her daughter were lowered into a lifeboat from the Titanic. Madeleine Mann (Mellenger) lived in Ridgeway Ontario, was a neighbor of Mr. McDougal, and they attended the same church. Madeleine Mann (Mellenger) gave the oak box and silver pin tray to Mr. McDougal when she moved to Toronto (Scarborough) Ontario to be closer to family. Mr. McDougal took photos of the box and tray in the home and sent copies to Madeleine in 1973 as documented in a letter from Madeleine to Cameron McDougal dated January 15, 1973. Madeleine Mann (Mellenger) is buried in the Ridgeway Cemetery and her gravestone has her identified as a Titanic survivor." Included in the leatherbound volume featured in this lot is a section discussing Madeleine Mellenger. Provenance: Ex-private G. Baran collection, Canada; Ex- Cameron McDougal, Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada, Ex-Madeline Mann - Passenger on the Titanic - Mr. McDougal was a neighbor of Titanic survivor Madeline Mann Condition: Sterling silver tray is excellent. Box shows some wear with minor losses to corners. The latch (probably original) functions well. Limited edition leatherbound Titanic Collector's Set in excellent condition. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #120719

Outstanding WW2 German Luftwaffe Document and Log Book Grouping to Veteran of the Spanish Civil War and Battle of Britain, Bf-110 Pilot, Helmut Nodinger Zerstorergeschwader 76, He Was Involved in the Incident With His Squadron on 8th June 1940 Involving Combat with Swiss Fighters Which It Appears He Shot One Swiss Bf-109 Down, grouping consists of his original award citations including Spanish Cross in bronze with swords, Iron Cross 2nd class, Iron Cross 1st class, Luftwaffe pilots award badge, silver grade Fighter Operational clasp, 1st October 1938 medal, NSFK Glider award badge and DRL Sports Award document folder. Citations are accompanied by other various items of paperwork including membership cards for pre war NSFK service, various Ausweis and Military passes many containing uniform images of Nodinger, promotion citation, plus other items. One interesting document in the grouping is a confirmation of the shooting down of an American Flying Fortress on 14th October 1943 whilst he was serving with 3/N.J.G 101. The log books that accompany the group cover his period of service from April 1936 to September 1941. In these books they cover his initial training and then move into his operational service. The fourth log book in the grouping has most of the combat actions. On the 18th December 1939 it details the shooting down of a Vickers Wellington, this was an attack by the RAF on Wilhelmshaven which his squadron intercepted. He was heavily involved in actions during the Western Campaign of 1940 attacking various targets in France. On the 8th June 1940 the log book details an action with a Swiss fighter (Bf 109), it would appear that on this date Swiss fighters engaged a Squadron of German fighters that flew over Swiss airspace whilst on an attack mission to Southern France, it is stated that one Swiss Bf109 was severely damaged, in the log it has inked underneath in a different hand and believed to been at a later date, “abgesch” short for abgeschossen”(shot down). On the 11th July 1940 was the start of his service during the Battle of Britain, his log book states that on a mission over Portland he shot down a Spitfire, on 8th August it states England and a latter addition “1 Hurricane abgesch”, various other missions over targets in England and claims of victories over Hawker Hurricane 13th August, Hurricane 15th August, Spitfire 1st September, Hurricane 8th September over Caen. His last mission during the Battle of Britain appears to be to Portland on 11th September 1940. The log then seems to continue in April 1941 when stationed in Denmark. On 23rd June 1941 a later added entry indicates shooting down of a Bristol Blenheim over Fredrikhaun. Various other interesting entries in the log book. Sadly it would appear that he would have had other log books that are no longer present in the grouping. An extremely interesting document grouping to a decorated aviator who was heavily involved in combat in the early stages of the war and during the Battle of Britain. Worthy of further research. (Large grouping)
