II, p.67, fig. 43.The present examples are based on the 17th-century set now in the Queen's Bedchamber at Ham House. Others are known to have been made for and supplied by Lenygon and Company of Burlington Street, London, who were a notable firm of decorators. A silver-gilt recusant chalice, 17th century, of plain form, the bowl with a slightly everted rim, above a spreading, stepped, circular foot engraved with a cross, unscrewing into three sections, unmarked, 14.5cm diameter 23.5cm high Provenance: Maurice 'Dick' Turpin, Barons Keep, London W14. After the Reformation, Catholics who refused to attend Church of England services were known as recusants. The chalices that the priests used were seldom hallmarked and were sometimes made to unscrew into several parts, to make it easier to conceal the chalice if necessary, as it was a punishable offence in England to attend any church service other than those of the Church of England.
