Three silver tumbler cups of plain circular form, 4 1/4in. (3cm). Alan Le Chard started silversmithing as a hobby in 1977 and his first workshop was in the cupboard under the stairs in his home at Morpeth Northumberland. In 1982, workshop and gallery space became available within the 13th Century chantry complex in Morpeth. Alan started up in business there and remained in residence until earlier this year. Whilst in residence he catered for a wide and varied clientele, even encouraging members of the public to design pieces of jewellery and silverware for themselves, or for special occasions. He also received commissions to design and make pieces for presentation to HM the Queen Elizabeth and Princess Anne and designed and made civic chains of office. Another pleasant task was that of making a sterling silver replica of Morpeth's 13th Century chantry bell tower for presentation to the mayor of the town in 1989 when Alan received permission to use this emblem to mark his silver. With the aid of the internet his jewellery and silverware reached an international audience and became collected world wide. He was also a gifted painter and a selection of his work forms part of our fine art sale on December 14th and is mainly displayed separately from the exhibition section of his silver work on show at our public viewings. See page 7 of the printed catalogue.
