A hand engraved coronet of a countess with monogram below. Hand engraved 'Caroline, Countess Brownlow, 4 July 1824'. Tested as approximately 18ct gold. 35 x 20mm, 6.80g.Caroline Countess Brownlow, née Fludyer, 1794-1824 is recorded as having died at the age of 30, after a sudden relapse of illness. Having married John Earl Brownlow on 22 September 1818, she was his second wife and left three surviving daughters. The Brownlow family resided at Belton House, Lincolnshire, from the 16th century until 1984. Outstretched wings with guilloché enamel in shades of sky and cornflower blue, with a plain brooch pin and 'C' catch. Tested as sterling silver, brooch fittings as 9ct gold. A total of nineteen rows of seed pearls, twisted into three torsades, to a pierced end cap, grain set with graduated rose cut diamonds. With 5cm tapering circular barrels, the flintlock actions engraved 'Cornhill, London' and 'Heylin', with various proof marks below the barrel, the short walnut grips with vacant silver escutcheons and mask butt plates, the plates with partial hallmarks. 19cm overall. (2) Heylin is Joseph Heylin (1730-1801) freeman of the London Gunmakers' Company from 1757 and Master of the Company from 1777. Despite considerable success he was bankrupt in 1779 and died in 1801. *CR: Barrels polished, trigger guards differ, part of action lacking on one, action loose on the stock on the other. Malcolm Appleby: The Trafalgar Medal, irregular shape being the outline of Nelson in a bicorn hat, the obverse engraved with HMS Victory in full sale, the reverse with the Battle of Trafalgar 'Together in Mortal Combat', hallmarked, signed Malcolm Appleby and marked SCM to the lower edge for Sim Comfort Associates who commissioned the medal for the Trafalgar bicentennial.
