A George II silver Warwick cruet frame, by Samuel Wood, London 1737, conventional cinquefoil form, wire-work frame, central carrying handle, on four scroll legs with webbed pad feet, applied with an oval cartouche engraved with an armorial, the underside with a scratch weight 25=13, with a large caster and two smaller casters, engraved with an armorial, and two unmarked silver-mounted glass bottles, height 25.5cm, approx. weighable 54oz. Provenance: sold in these rooms, 30 April 2008, lot 1033. The armorial is that of Scott.
λA George II Scottish silver-mounted ivory and dark hardwood snuff mull, circa 1750, waisted oval form, with alternate panels of decoration, the hinged cover with a pierced and elaborate hinge, and an oval cartouche, with a crest and motto, the oval base inscribed ' Dona: 7mo. Ob: 10mo Feby 1755 atat: Suae 85' plain thumb-piece, the base with an engraved cipher, height 6.3cm. Provenance: sold in these rooms, 31st October 2007, lot 1235. The crest is that of Bothwell, Lord Holyroodhouse, a Scottish title created in 1607 and deemed dormant in 1634, although claimed by Henry Bothwell of Glencorse a hundred years later.

A Victorian silver and enamel vesta case, by John Banks, Chester 1900, rectangular form, the hinged cover with a ring attachment, the front enamelled '1881 MAJUBA, wiped-out 1900', length 4.5cm, approx. weight 1oz. During the Second Anglo-Boer War, "Remember Majuba" was a rallying cry of British soldiers. It referred to the British defeat at Battle of Majuba Hill on 27th February 1881 during the First Anglo-Boer War. Exactly 19 years later, on 27th February 1900, General Piet Cronjι and 4,000 of his men surrendered after the British victory at the Battle of Paardeberg. In the jingoistic poem, The Absent-Minded Beggar, by Rudyard Kipling, there is a line which reads: "He is out on active service, wiping something off a slate". Hence the wording on the vesta: "MAJUBA WIPED OUT" signifies the restoration of British pride. Reference: www.southAfricanmedals.com.
