Lot 1

Features ornate root wood grip, carved in basket weave fashion on the outside, cast silver and chased pommel with thistles and foliage, the pierced pommel set with a very light brown citrine/stone. The 31 cm long blade, being of steel, with spear tip and cutting top edge. Blade features acid-etched engravings to both sides, in overall excellent condition, with regimental number, piper, foliage, arms etc. The scabbard of black leather, with solid silver fittings/holders for the fork & knife. The eating fork & knife (the latter maker stamped G. Noewbould) of root wood with basket weave design with white citrine stones to pommel. There may have been a regimental designation at one time to top locket, but since removed showing 4 fixing holes. Rear of scabbard retains belt loop attachment. A fine & rare piece, with exceptional engravings to both sides of blade. Metal parts show yellowing, so possibly plated silver on brass, however this has not been tested.

SPITTLE. 9/R.FUS: 1914/15 Star, impressed named 2071 PTE J. SPITTLE. R. FUS. War Medal & Victory Medal (with M.I.D. clasp), impressed named 2071 PTE J. SPITTLE. R. FUS. Medals court mounted for display and comes with a Walking Club 7 Mile award to J. Spittle dated 25/1/1913. Related paper research is included, including original purchase paperwork showing these were bought in 2013 for 668 GBP/$1044 AUDJoseph Michaelis Walter Spittle was born in Ealing, London 22/3/1896 and enlisted for service 27/8/1914. Served France 1/6/1915 with 9/Royal Fusiliers. Silver War Badge ‘wounds’ issued 27/4/1918 while serving 10/R.F. Discharged ‘No longer Physically Fit’ 18/4/1918. Shown as died in Hampshire in 1966. He is mentioned in The National Roll of the Great War, where it is stated he took part in the battles of Festubert, Loos, Arras, Beaumont-Hamel and on the Somme. He was Mentioned in Dispatches and won the Military Medal for distinguished Gallantry in the Field and was twice wounded. M.M. (L.G. 21/10/1916) - most likely a July-August 1916 First Battle of the Somme award.

LANC: REGT; King’s South Africa Medal, 2 clasps, SOUTH AFRICA 1901 & SOUTH AFRICA 1902, impressed named 3140 PTE M. KELLY, E. LANC: REGT; GVR Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, impressed named 3140 PTE M. KELLY. E. LANC: REGT & Army temperance Association Award of Merit Medal, impressed to rear, PTE. J. KELLY, 1ST EAST LANCASHIRE REGT., 1911. Medals swing mounted, having been period silver-plated.Martin Kelly was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1873. He enlisted into the 1st Bn East Lancashire Regiment 12/2/1891, having served previously with the 4th Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Served India 26/11/1892 – 28/2/1896, Burma 28/2/1896 -14/12/1897 & South Africa 13/1/1900 – 24/11/1902. Awarded L.S. & G.C. Medal 1912. Discharged 30/4/1913 in Colchester, having served 22 years & 84 days, with his overall conducted graded as ‘exemplary’. He was further employed as a ‘Pensioner Messenger’ At the War Office.

British Army Boer War & WW1 medal group to Corporal Thomas Hart, who served in both the King’s Royal Rifle Corps & Royal Engineers during his military career. Queen’s South Africa medal 1899-1901, 5 clasps, CAPE COLONY, TUGELA HEIGHTS, RELIEF OF LADYSMITH, TRANSVAAL & LAING’S NEK, impressed named 8558 PTE T. HART, K.R.R.C. 1914/15 Star, War & Victory Medals impressed named 55560 CPL. T. HART. R.E. Swing mounted, with Silver War Badge, numbered B169599 & Hart’s 2 pressed card dog tags. A file of copied service details/records is included. Thomas Hart was born in Lancashire in 1879, serving with the K.R.R.C. from 1894 until discharge in 1902. Served 3rd Bn K.R.R.C. in South Africa. Re-enlisted for service 1/12/1914, being in France just 6 days later, serving with the Railway Construction Coys, R.E. Awarded S.W.B. & discharged 28/3/1919.

British War and Victory Medal, impressed named 372 PTE F. M CLEMENT. 21 M.G. BN. A.I.F.; War Medal 1939-45, impressed named VF516157 B. F. CLEMENT. Medals come with a silver ring, 5 service/association badges & ribbon bar. Fergus Clement enlisted for service 22/7/1916, served with 15th & 21st Machine Gun Companies. France 17/2/1917. Prisoner of War (Germany) 15/4/1917, being captured at Lagnicourt. Repatriated to England 9/12/18. Returned to Australia 5/3/1919, being discharged 25/3/1919. Died 12/7/1954. The day of his capture 2 sections of the 15th M.G.C. were detailed to move forward of the line in support of the 8th Australian Infantry Brigade in the Bapaume area. Both sections were attacked early that morning by the Germans, which would have been when Private Clement was captured. 3,850 Australians were captured by the Germans on the Western Front between 1916 and 1918, making P.O.W. groups fairly scarce to the market.Betty Clement enlisted for service, serving with the Australian Army Medical Women’s Service 1/7/1944, discharging 3/7/1946. This last most likely being her only issue medal due to short service.

Mizar From Major L.W. Greville A.I.F. 13.11.45. Lorne Warwick Greville was born in Boulder, W.A. 11/1/1904. He enlisted into the A.I.F. 9/11/1942. Served Army catering Corps, discharging 16/6/1944.

Related miniatures to the service medals include (except E.A.M.E. & Legion Merit Medal), along with full size & mini Full Colonel Sterling silver rank insignia. Bound & award documents for Legion of Merit Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Military Commendation Medal & 1944-dated Bachelor of Science & Industrial Engineering from Ohio University. Related original paperwork shows photos & details, showing he was commissioned into the US Air Force February 1945, retiring in 1975. His commendation certificates show that he was instrumental in developing and supporting electronic warfare & radar systems during his tenure.

Measures 100 cm x 135 cm. Scarce to this famous of British Army Lancer regiments.

Complete with a gold bullion cockade with GVR cypher, extensive red horse hair plume and brass and leather chin chain strap, with pair of gilded lion bosses. Lined in carmine silk with a leather sweatband and embossed Hawke’s & Co. London maker’s mark. A truly beautiful example.

Full seal skin body, with silk-based bullion taped left side with single silver king’s crown uniform button. White silk interior lined, maker-marked for William Anderson, Edinburgh. As worn, some minor scuffing etc. Generally, very good.

This lot comprises the following items: A frame containing the vellum officer’s commission dated 31 December 1878 and signed by Queen Victoria, appointing “George Hall McLaughlin, Gentleman” to be a Lieutenant in Her Majesty’s Forces 1889 Queen’s Jubilee Medal, named Egyptian Campaign Medal and Khedive’s Star, the first two having been silver-plated, showing contact marks - especially the Egypt Medal, together with an original photograph of him in full uniform, wearing his medals. The second frame includes his embroidered waist belt, cross belt and sabretache. An original hand-coloured 15” x 12” portrait of Major McLaughlin. His Pattern 1822, Artillery Officer’s Sword, complete with his original sword knot. Extensive research on Major McLaughlin, including a family tree going back to King Edward I of England (‘Edward Longshanks 1239 – 1307) and correspondence with his grandson confirming the provenance of these items. Lot previously sold at Bonham’s 2011.Major George Hall McLaughlin was born in Hampshire in 1859, the son of Major General Edward McLaughlin. He was commissioned into the Royal Horse Artillery 31/12/1878 and served in the Egyptian Campaign during 1884, receiving the Egyptian Campaign Medal and Khedive’s Star. Major McLaughlin continued to serve with the Royal Horse Artillery until he died of illness shortly after the outbreak of World War One. He came from a long line of senior ranking military men, with his family tree going back to King Edward I of England (‘Edward Longshanks'). Subsequent family members include British film director Guy Ritchie, who is descended from Major McLaughlin’s brother. McLaughlin was known as ‘The Galloping Major’ for his love of racehorses, both owning them and betting on them.
