Hugh Howard, followed by the names of 31 notables of the county (MPs, jurors, JPs, clergy and gentry) and concluding with Robert F. Saunders Esq., High Sheriff. The inner and outer edges are decorated with foliage, fruit and flowers; at the top is an impression of Glendalough; at the bottom the arms of Dennis impaling Saunders (the recipient's wife and mother were Saunderses); to the right is an Irish harp; and to the left a caduceus and horn of plenty; in between are the heads of four mythological women.A magnificent object and a superb example of Irish silverware of the period. Thomas Stratford Dennis (1781-1870) was at the time the heir to Fortgranite, in which he succeeded his father in 1837. The year 1822 was marked by troubles in Ireland - an ongoing economic slump following the end of the Napoleonic Wars, a disastrous failure of the potato crop, and agrarian unrest: hence, presumably, the need for Dennis's "successful exertions in repressing the spirit of insubordination".
