An important early 19th Century shagreen-cased Pocket Drawing Instrument Set engraved ‘R Trevithick Vivian and West Company’, unsigned, ivory and brass sector, scale, dividers, brass-mounted ink pens and pencils, the lid with silver metal label with engraved dedication, F-G, some wear, slight damage and old repair; Richard Trevithick (1771-1833) was a pioneer visionary of steam locomotion who achieved much but was dogged by misfortune. In 1803, he worked with Andrew Vivian and William West in a shortlived partnership to produce a viable road-going steam Locomotive; by February 1804 he had produced the world’s first successful steam Locomotive to run on rails, funded by Samuel Homfray after he purchased Trevithick’s patents. This would suggest that this historic instrument Set dates specifically to 1803. This Set is offered by descent from a keen collector and steam enthusiast who was actively purchasing in the west of England in the 1950s.
