Burns, Marsha: Portraits of photographers Portrait series. 1984-1985. 11 vintage gelatin silver prints on Agfa paper. Each circa 25 x 20 cm. Each signed and editioned1/25 by the photographer in ink, as well as stamped and annotated in pencil on the verso. Marsha Burns began as a painter, studying at the University of Washington (1963-65) and then at the University of Massachusetts (1967-69). Burns began to work with photography in 1972 while living in Texas, and initially used the medium to experiment with sequential imagery. After relocating to Seattle, however, she began to focus on creating enigmatic figure studies and nudes in her studio. In the following decades Burns continued to photograph in her studio, but she began to introduce more overt social content into her work. Inspired by a visit to Berlin in 1984, Burns started making portraits of young adults who chose to set themselves apart from the mainstream, first in her native Seattle and later in other cities. These portraits were taken on that stay in Berlin and show members and participants at the Werkstatt für Photographie in Berlin. The photographers and other people portrayed include: Wilmar Koenig, Andrea Petsch, Benoit Maubray, Benny Ochse, Sebastian Rust, Carolina Ochse, Andre Kirchner, Rheinhard Peiler and Hajo Corsten. – In very good condition. Muthesius, Eckart / Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Company: Interiors of railway wagons made by the Gloucester Railway & Carriage Company Interiors of railway wagons made by the Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Company, most for the British colonies in Africa (Gold Coast Railway, Nigerian Railway, Trans-Zambezia Railway and Buenos Aires Western Railway). Circa 1900-1913. 8 vintage large-format gelatin silver and collodion paper prints. Each circa 28 x 36 cm. Each with company archive stamp (dated 1936) and several annotated in pencil on the verso. This interesting group of photographs shows various interiors of the wagons of British colonial railway lines with different functions and furnishings of the various wagons such as a kitchen, a billard room, an office, private cabins, a sleeping cabin, a dark room for photo development, all manufactured by the Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Company. In 1936 the firm won the contract to build a 68 feet long air-conditioned carriage for the Maharajah of Indore to be designed by the German architect Eckart Muthesius which included a kitchen, servants quarters and a nursery. The architect used these photographs to help him in designing the interior of the carriage. – Traces of use in corners/edges, creases, a few small tears in edges. Signed and dated in lower edge, mounted to brown board, titled by the photographer in ink below the image on the mount The German painter, printmaker, photographer, author and illustrator Kurt Wendlandt was among the most creative artists of postwar West Germany. Since his studies at the State Academy of the Arts 1937-43, his artistic development was continuously interrupted, also due to a war injury. After the war he finally was able to work again and he began experimenting with many transparent materials; in 1958 he produced his first Lichtgrafken. Heinz Hajek-Halke was a close friend and both artitsts were part of the avantgarde "Lichtgrafik" scene of Berlin in the 1960s. Because Wendlandt neglected his commercial promotion, his photographs are hardly known. Nevertheless his light graphics and other works can be found in many museums and collections today. – Minimal handling marks, otherwise in very good condition.
