Liberty and Co., an Arts and Crafts copper and enamelled clock case, the 4.5 inch dial designed by Archibald Knox, with stylised berry vine motif and Arabic numerals, above an enamel plaque attributed to Charles Fleetwood Varley, depicting a stormy coastal landscape, within a Hayle copper case, probably by J F Pool, planished effect, repousse decorated with motto 'Time and Tide Wait for No Man', 37cm wide, 24cm high Note: although pewter and silver examples of Liberty clocks, manufactured by Birmingham maker, Haseler, under trade names of Cymric and Tudric, appear regularly, relatively few copper examples exist. The copper work is likely to have been executed in Cornwall by one of the Hayle companies. A particular feature of Pool's work is the pressed planished effect finish which appears on most of their work, as well as the sharp edged, high definition repousse lettering and the rivetted construction. Fleetwood Varley became one of the most celebrated enamellers of the Arts and Crafts period, famous for his seascapes and landscapes which often appear inset into pewter and silver caskets. Although unsigned, this plaque, which measures 4.5cm x 13cm, is almost certainly by Varley.
Theatrical interest, an Edwardian Art Nouveau style silver double photograph frame, in the form of a crown, ebossed with fleurs de lis and an inscription Monsieur Beaucaire, April 20th 1903 with compliments from Mr Lewis Waller and Mr Frank Curzon, Mander and Sons, Birmingham 1902, 11.5cm x 12cm Note: made to commemorate the 200th performace of the play Monsieur Beaucaire by Booth Takington, at the London Comedy Theatre.
