India Medal 1896 in silver with bars Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Tirah 1897-98, Waziristan 1901-2, engraved to Lieut J S Swan Comst Transpt Dept. Retired as a Lieut Colonel 1922. Originally Commissioned in to the KOSB as a 2nd Lieut Dec 1889, later transferring in to the Indian Staff Corps 28/1/1895. During WW1 he was S & T Officer at Balooghat, Calcutta. Lieut Robert Walter Maxwell Brine 1/5th North'D Fus. Killed In Action Belmont 23/11/1899, shot through the head while peering over a boulder. S.A. & Trans War by Louis Creswicke noted "A Boer holding a white flag in his left hand murdered Lt Brine with his right" pg 89 Vol II. Medals - Queens Sudan (silver) and Khedives Sudan Medal (silver) with Khartoum clasp, both named Lieut. (Son of Col Bruce Brine RE). EF (2)

Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society Silver Medal, British War Medal, Mercantile Marine Medal: Liverpool shipwreck medal inscribed 'Robert Jones, Boatswain S/S 'Cymric' 'For a gallant attempt to rescue a ship mate who had fallen overboard in the Mersey 5/9/1902'. On blue ribbon with attractive buckle clasp. (EF+). With his service papers. Robert Jones survived the sinking of the Cymric by U-20 (a year to the day after U-20 sunk the Lusitania 8.5.15) on 8th May 1916. With several pictures of the Cymric. Robert J. Jones on MM & BWM. Liverpool Shipwreck Society record confirms name as Robert J. Jones. Interesting Mercantile Navy group.

Lot also includes original Commission Scroll, 18th Division Gallant Conduct Card '28th September 1916 at the Capture of Thiepval', 17x photos of Cowling and 11x photos friends (mostly Bedford Regt). Plus Soviet 40th Anniversary Medal with named Certificate. Suez Canal Zone Medal (silver hallmarked) with Suez Landings clasp, and two Red Cross Medals named to M. Bramhall.

Outstanding and scarce Great War Military Medal group & ephemera to 265674 Pte W. H. Gunn 1/1 Herts Regt. Comprising MM + 1914/15 trio (trio 2801 Herts Regt.) mounted as worn on bar plus WW2 Defence Medal in box of issue & slip to W.H. Gunn in West Ealing W13. Other medals include: London Private Fire Bde Assn. LSGC. (Rim engraved 'W. Gunn 1939-49 Eastman's Fire Bde', on ribbon with bar 'W.H. Gunn'). Walter Gunn went to France with 1/1 Herts Regt on 21.1.1915 and later transferred to Bedfordshire Regt as 265674 (Bed & Herts. Regt.). His MM was awarded for gallantry as battalion runner, almost certainly for 11.5.1918. On this day the battalion were on their way up to the line to join the 112th Bde 37th Div. The battalion (25 officers & 500 O/Rs.) marched into an area heavily infected by gas. All the battalion became casualties. Letters accompanying the group refer to this gassing. L/Cpl. Gunn was I/C of battalion runners. Ephemera accompanying the group includes: silver pocket watch engraved 'W.H. Gunn', ribbon bar with MD, Herts Regt cap badge, wrist I/D tag, red & brown dog tags, Herts Rgt. lapel badge British Legion fob sports medal in silver with chain, medal ribbons. Paper ephemera includes: pay books x 2, photo: recovery from loss of sight due to gassing, large photo in uniform with MM ribbon, issue cert. for Herts. lapel badge, NR I/D card, demob cert: also included: silver fire medal 'Acton', a book: '22 months under fire' His name in cover. 2 x blazer badges, letter re award of MM from officer, parish mag announcing marriage dated 1920. Finally a fascinating album of 20 photographs of Walter Gunn in WW1 and as a fireman in WW2. A fabulous group direct from the family who have treasured them for nearly a century.
