Between 1952 and 1955 he studied at the Royal College of Art under Professor Robert Goodden and was a contemporary of Gerald Benney.On graduating in 1955, Welch became a product designer and set up a workshop in Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire. The Silk Mill premises he found had been the home of C. R. Ashbee's Guild of Handicraft. Here Welch produced one off pieces and special commissions.In 1964, Welch produced a very successful range of domestic silver for Heals. Five years later he decided to open his studio shop. A rare and impressive large Arts and Crafts style silver and enamel narwhal tusk table lampmark of John Ferguson Gow, London 1951 The narwhal tusk stem with hand crafted silver and cloisonné enamel surmount and central knop, with enamelled bands of stylised flower heads and foliage, stylised leaf motifs all enamelled in blues and greens, within applied ribbon-twist bands, the broad stepped base gradually spirals outwards, the surface applied with alternating cloisonné enamel flower heads and leaves with beads over a light stippled ground, with rivet head constructed bands and polished sides,on a shallow wood base, height 52cm, diameter at base 24cm.Footnotes:John Ferguson Gow created a narwhal tusk mace for the British Dental Association.This was presented to The British Dental Association by his son Flight-Lieutenant John Alexander Gow Royal Air Force.
