Lot 451

A pair of Victorian Celtic point pattern tablespoons, The Ayrshire Rifles, by Elizabeth Eaton, London 1855, retailed by D.C. Rait of Glasgow, the terminals with a crest, length 22.3cm, approx. weight 4,5oz. (2) Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. In response to the threat of French invasion, various independent Volunteer units emerged. The Ayrshire Rifles consisted of some fourteen individual corps by 1860. in 1880 they consolidated to form the 3rd Ayrshire Rifle Volunteers, which in 1881 became a volunteer battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers.

Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. These were purchased by the 2nd battalion on return to England form South Africa in 1909. The elephant refers to the Battle Honour 'Assaye'.

A George IV silver regimental basting spoon, 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot, by William Eaton, London 1827, King's Honeysuckle pattern, the reverse of the terminal with the regimental badge, length 31cm, approx. weight 6oz. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. The regiment returned to England from Ireland in 1826. It then left in 1828 for Ceylon. In 1881 the 58th Foot became the 2nd Battalion the Northamptonshire Regiment.

A George II Irish silver regimental soup ladle, The Royal South Lincolnshire Militia, possibly by Jonathan Pasley, Dublin 1757, circular bowl, the terminal engraved 'Rl. South Lincoln', length 35.5cm, approx. weight 6.5oz. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. The South Lincoln Militia was raised at Boston in July 1759. The 'Royal' was given to the unit by George III after it marched to defend Liverpool against a possible attack by a French naval squadron under Captain Thurot. In 1798 five hundred men of the regiment were deployed to Ireland during an abortive Irish rebellion.

In 1922 the 16th Queen's Lancers amalgamated with the 5th Royal Irish Lancers to form the 16th/5th Lancers, and in 1954 the regiment was redesignated the 16th/5th Queen's Royal Lancers.

A pair of George III silver regimental tablespoons, The York Rangers of Upper Canada, by Richard Crossley, London 1804, Old English pattern, the terminal with the regimental markings of the York Rangers and engraved 'Follow The Sun' and 'York Rangers', length 22.3cm, approx. weight 4.5oz. (2) Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. The York Rangers Militia of Upper Canada was raised in 1803, by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Stephenson of the 1st Battalion the 5th (or Northumberland) Regiment of Foot. This was mainly for garrison duties. They were named after Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, Commander-in-Chief of the Army. The town of York in Upper Canada became Toronto in 1834.

Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. Originally raised in 1860 as a Yorkshire West Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps. In 1881 they became a volunteer battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. In 1908 they became the 4th Battalion of the regiment.

A Chinese silver regimental table bell, The King's (Shropshire Light Infantry), by Wang Hing, circa 1893, inscribed 'Presented to the Officer's Mess 85th Light Infantry by Lt. Col Ravenhill, Augt. 1893', height 15.5cm, approx. weight 11oz. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. Edward Ravenhill was commissioned on 25 August 1865 into the 86th King's Light Infantry. He served in the 2nd Afghan war of 1879. He was promoted to Lt. Colonel in 1889. This bell was a farewell present to the Mess when he went on the half pay list.

A pair of George III old Sheffield plated regimental wine coasters, 9th (East Norfolk) Regiment of Foot, by Matthew Boulton circa 1815, circular form, fluted decoration, gadroon borders, turned wooden bases the centre with buttons engraved with the regimental badge, diameter 17cm. (2) Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. After the end of the Napoleonic wars, the 9th Regiment of Foot returned to England in 1818. These coasters would have been acquired for the Mess prior to departure for the East Indies in 1819.

A silver regimental dish, 28th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment, (The Artists Rifles), by Omar Ramsden and Alywn Carr, London 1919, circular form, spot-hammered decoration, applied order, the centre with the regimental badge, diameter 10.2cm, approx. weight 1.8oz. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. Raised in 1859 in London drawing its members from artists, musicians and actors. In 1880 it became the 20th Middlesex (Artists') Rifle Volunteer Corps and in 1908 it became the 28th (County of London) Battalion of the London Regiment. In 1947 it became the 21st Special Air Service Regiment (Artists Rifles).

A pair of Chinese silver regimental matchbox covers, The North Staffordshire regiment (the Prince of Wales's), marked Nanking, Silver, circa 1938, rectangular form, applied with the regimental badge, length 6cm, approx. weight 2.4oz. (2) Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. These matchbox covers once belonged to Capt. S.R Hunt, and were acquired from his Widow. Captain Hunt was stationed in Shanghai. His possessions were abandoned when he escaped the advancing Japanese, and was re-united with them in 1946.

A Victorian silver and glass regimental pepper mill, The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment), by John Grinsell and Sons, Birmingham 1892, circular form, hob nail cut body, the base inscribed 'Presented to 1st Battalion XIV PWP Regt. by 2nd Lt. C. E. Luard', height 8.5cm. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. Charles Eckford Luard was born on 11 October 1869. After Marlborough and Oxford he was commissioned into the Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment), and this pepper mill would have been his joining present. In 1896 he transferred to the Indian Staff Corps. in 1910 he was appointed Superintendent for Census Central India. He also published widely, and became the Private Secretary to the Maharajh of Indore. He retired in1925 as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Staff corps.

A Victorian silver regimental cream jug, Leeds Castle Corps, Kent Rifle Volunteers, by Henry Holland, London 1875, rectangular form, canted corners, scroll handle, engraved decoration and inscribed 'Lieut. J.S. Roper, Leeds Castle KRV 1877', height 8.7cm, approx. weight 4.5oz. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. Various corps of the Kent Rifle Volunteers were raised in 1859. A number of regroupings took place and by 1868 there were five Administrative Battalions each covering a different area. The 31st Corps were designated Leeds Castle in 1877. There were three officers including Lieut. Roper.

Lot 474

A silver regimental cigarette box, 4th Queens Own Hussars, by The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths company, London 1925, plain rectangular form, the hinged cover with the regimental badge, length 12cm. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. The regiment was raised in 1685 and served in the Iberian Peninsula, the 1st Afghan War, and at Balaclava when it charged with the Light Brigade. When this cigarette box was made the Regiment were in Lucknow, India.

A presentation silver regimental salver, The King's Royal Rifle Corps, by The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company, London 1915, circular form, gadroon border, the centre with the regimental badge and with five facsimile signatures, on four claw and ball feet, diameter 25.3cm, approx. weight 19.9oz. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. The signatures are of five young officers, who were attached to the King's Royal Rifles in 1915/16 on a course of instruction, and on leaving, presented this salver to the Officers Mess. The signatures are Hal Verelst, (Coldstream Guards), killed in action September 1916 at the Battle of Lesboeufs. Arthur F. Smith, (Coldstream Guards) went on to be Chief of Staff, Army headquarters, India. Charles Loyd, (Coldstream Guards), Chief of Staff to Lord Alanbrooke and ADC General to King George VI. H.A. Sutherland (Black Watch) went on to be Deputy Lieutenant of Peeblesshire, and John Noel, (King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry) taken prisoner and held at Stalag IV-DTorgau Prisoner of War Campnear Leipzig.

An Edwardian silver regimental goblet, the 4th Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers, (City of London Regiment) by Searle and Co., London 1903, the plain circular bowl engraved 'Presented to the Officers 4th Battn. Royal Fusiliers by Bt. Lt. Col S. Lawford, 11 December 1903', the reverse engraved 'Offered Back on Disbandment of the Battalion as a memento June 1922', the stem with trailing ivy, on a raised circular foot, beaded border, height 16cm, approx. weight 12.5oz. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. Elements of the Battalion were deployed to South Africa in 1901 and were organised as mounted infantry employed to protect lines of communication and columns against the Boers. Major Sydney Lawford, previously with the 2nd Battalion was already in South Africa serving as a Special Service Officer. He was appointed to command the Mounted Infantry Battalion. Sydney Lawford was educated at Wellington College, and he entered Sandhurst in 1883. He was commissioned in 1885. After South Africa the regiment was deployed to Ireland until 1909. In 1907 he left the 4th Battalion and joined the School of Mounted Infantry at Longmore Camp. In 1912 he became Commandant there. When the 1st World War broke out Brigadier General Sydney Lawford was appointed commander of 22nd Infantry brigade, 7th Division. After the war and now Major General he took up the appointment of General Officer Commanding Lahore District in India. He went on to have a scandalous affair with May Aylen, the wife of one of his officers, who fell pregnant. Divorce proceedings were initiated after the birth of a boy named Peter. Sydney Lawford and May Aylen were ostracized by friends and society. In 1937 the Lawfords moved to Hollywood, and they were keen to push their son into acting. Sir Sydney died in 1953. Peter Lawford married Patricia Kennedy, the sister of JF Kennedy in 1954. He gained fame with the 'Rat Pack' of the 1960's, and he died in 1985.

Lot 481

A George III silver regimental entree dish and cover from The Picton Service, by Paul Storr, London 1814, rectangular form, fluted decoration, chased anthemion border, the leaf capped fluted handle with lion masks and with a beaded border, engraved with the Picton arms and 'Third Division', the base with a shell and gadroon border, and engraved with a crest, both sections numbers '1', length 32cm, approx. weight 77.5oz. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. At the close of the Peninsular war in April 1814, the General Staff and Officers of the regiments who had served under Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Picton in the 'Fighting' third Division, commissioned a magnificent and generous dinner service to be presented to their Commander. Picton enjoyed a short retirement before he was called on again by The Duke of Wellington to face Napoleon, where he took command of the 5th Division. At the Battle of Waterloo, in the early afternoon of the 18th June 1815, General Picton was killed by a musket ball to the head. he was the most senior officer killed at Waterloo. Six pieces from the Picton service were sold at Christie's, New York, Important Silver, 14 April 2005, lot 181. A pair of candelabra from the service were sold at Christie's, New York, Important Silver, 17 May 2011, lot 160. This entree dish was purchased at Woolley and Wallis, Salisbury, Silver Sale, 30 January 2008, lot 160.

A Victorian silver-gilt mounted travelling dressing table set, retailed by Asprey, 166 Bond Street, the silver by John Harris, London 1856, the covers with engraved foliate scroll decoration, with a crowned monogram, comprising: a beaker, three scent bottles, two jars and four boxes, hobnail cut glass bodies, two glass bodies a.f, with a tray of implements including a pencil, a cork screw and three other items with mother-of-pearl handles, the front with a jewellery drawer with a writing slope, the interior of the hinged cover with a stationary wallet, in a fitted brass bound coromandel case, with a crowned monogram, and with a leather storm jacket, length 37.3cm, approx. weighable 16oz. Provenance: The crowned initials MH are for Mary Anna Devereux, Viscountess Hereford. She was born in 1844, daughter of Sir Charles Morgan, 1st Baron Tredegar, and was married in 1863 to Robert Devereux, 16th Viscount Hereford. She died in 1924. By family descent to the current owner.
