Lot 116

A very fine stained and inlaid miniature ivory Netsuke by Yoshida Homei, c.1880, in the form of a girl seated writing a book, her green-stained tunic with silver stitched obi, more silver forming the himotoshi, various mon in copper, abalone and with the signature engraved Homei on a red lacquer reserve, 2.5cm The signature on this beautifully rendered and sympathetic figure is curiously ill-defined. There are two possibilities: one, the original has been lost and replaced by someone with little talent (unlikely), and two (very likely), that the netsuke is by the master hand of Ishikawa Komei, whose signature can - intentionally - be at variance from the quality of his carving. Komei, also known as Mitsuaki, Hyosai or Juzan, was born in 1852 and began by carving netsuke but, during the Meiji era, devoted himself mainly to okimono, often of large size and always of the highest quality, only making the occasional essay back to netsuke. He was a founder with Yoshida Homei of the Tokyo School. CONDITION REPORT: No obvious faults. 6.2grams Height 2.5cm

A porcelain blue and white ribbed Bowl, Wanli, late Ming dynasty,c.1600, painted on the exterior with flowering and fruiting branches, below a border of ten galloping horses over waves, the base with four character seal mark fu gui jia qi within a double rectangle, 21.5cm For similar bowls, see Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, vol. II, pl. 1280, p. 725, where it states a bowl of this type with silver gilt mount by Jacob Borch and with a Copenhagen hallmark of 1608, is in the collection of Grosserer Holger Drucken, Copenhagen. CONDITION REPORT: A 15cm section of body professionally restored. Light fritting to rim. Small rim chip and chip to foot interior.

A pair of blue and white Sauce Boats, mid 18th century, each of silver shape and painted in a strong cobalt blue with peony and shrubs in a garden, 23.5cm CONDITION REPORT: One sauce boat with three rim chips, a small glaze chip to the exterior rim and underside of handle. Other sauce boat with small chip to spout and rim, firing crack to handle and small chip to rim.

Lot 276

An unusual mother-of-pearl Snuff Box, c.1820, of octagonal form, each surface well engraved with cooing and billing doves and or/diaper, silver hinges, 5.9cm A parallel to this decoration can be found on gaming counters of the same vintage. However, unlike some similar boxes which have been constructed later from counters, this is period throughout. CONDITION REPORT: No obvious faults.

A rare, silver-inlaid Buddhist lion Seal, 18th/19th century, the male dog with turned body, its fur inlaid with silver lines, the square plinth with a few shallow dents, one corner dinted, 4cm The seal characters read: Jing Yan Jiang Guan (Teaching position of Histories and Classics to the Emperors). CONDITION REPORT: Small knocks to side of base, otherwise no obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.

Lot 291

An attractive and rare silver Seal, late 16th/first half 17th century of a goggle-eyed, grinning Buddhist lion, the fur details sharply engraved, 3.8cm The seal characters read: Jin Yan (owner's name). Compare with the bronze scroll weight illustrated in China's Renaissance in Bronze, the Clague Collection, Robert D. Mowry, Phoenix Art Museum, 1994, no. 47. CONDITION REPORT: No obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.

A silver Cigarillo Case, by Tuck Ching, c.1885, hinged and with each side chased and pierced with small birds flying amongst bamboo above a pheasant, stamped TC and single character mark, 12.5 x 8.6cm CONDITION REPORT: Small sections of bamboo shoot and leaf loose on right hand top and bottom around shield. Generally intact. See blow up image interior of shield.

A Wrist Rest, 18th century, the composite slide pierced and carved on one end with a dragon, the other with foliage and joined by a silver sheath and with a silver dragon-engraved support, 18.8cm CONDITION REPORT: We believe the smaller floral section of jade to be of earlier date than the larger dragon carved section. The silver mounts may be disguising flaws and possibly a join, but have not been removed to confirm. No obvious other faults.
