London Gazette 23.8.1945 Lieutenant-Colonel (temporary) Chisholm Edward Hugh SPARROW (39125), Corps of Royal Engineers (Kitchen, Herts) `At Lauenberg on 29th April, 1945, Major Sparrow`s company had a task of building and operating Close Support Rafts for the crossing of the Elbe. While the work was in progress the area was frequently shelled by the enemy and subjected to heavy low level air attacks which wounded some of the men and damaged some of the equipment. Throughout these attacks, by his coolness and disregard of personal danger, Major Sparrow set a fine example and encouraged his Company to keep the rafts operating. On one occasion he personally went into the water to secure a raft which was in danger of drifting downstream during an air attack. The success of the rafting operation in his sector was entirely due to his efforts.` O.B.E. Pauline Rader, a brooch pendant, set with an amethyst paste enclosed by simulated pearls, to an oval frame with cannetile type border, signed to reverse, 4.5cm long Pauline Rader, daughter of a jeweller, began designing her own jewellery around 1962. Her designs were influenced by her love for the jewellery of antiquity being highly imaginative and usually massive in size, often showing mystical Greek or Italian influences. She used heavy antique gold tone, gold wash or silver tone metal for the base with pave set or bezel set, faceted simulated coloured stones, simulated pearls, glass coloured beads and rhinestones. Some of her designs included polished gold and white enamelled finish. Pauline Rader produced jewellery with the look of chunky MOD designs including some ancient coin replica pieces of jewellery, figurals and flowers. Mark: “PAULINE RADER” in block letters in an oval cartouche. Pauline Rader produced designs in small quantities for a select clientele and elite boutiques, therefore, her jewellery is difficult to find and very collectible. She ceased operations in the 1980s.
