Auditor of the Imprests was a profitable office of the Exchequer, responsible for auditing the accounts of officers of the English crown to whom money was issued for government expenditure, from 1559 to 1785. Provenance: from the collection of Lord Fitzwalter , Goodnestone Park, Kent. In the mid-18th century Sir Brook Bridges, the 3rd baronet, married Fanny Fowler, co-heiress of the FitzWalter barony. The family also became linked with Jane Austen as Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Brook Bridges and Fanny Fowler, married Austen s brother Edward. Jane Austen visited Goodnestone frequently and began writing Pride and Prejudice just after a visit to the home in 1796. The elegant Palladian house was originally built in 1704 by Brook Bridges, 1st Baronet, and is surrounded by one of the most celebrated gardens in England.
