Execution for murder.- Ferrers (Lawrence Shirley, fourth Earl) An archive of printed material relating to the trial and execution of Ferrers, including accounts of the trial and prints showing his execution, some spotting, v.s., 1760 (Sm.Qty.)⁂ Lord Ferrers (1720-1760) was the last member of the House of Lords to be tried by his peers for the murder of his steward by shooting. According to popular mythology, he was hanged with a silk cord rather than the usual hemp rope. On 5th May 1760, dressed in a light-coloured suit embroidered with silver, which he had worn at his wedding he was taken in his own carriage from the Tower of London to Tyburn and there hanged by Thomas Turlis. After the execution his body was taken to Surgeon's Hall for public exhibition and dissection.
