MIGUEL ZARAGOZA ARANQUIZNA (Philippines, 1842- Manila, 1923)."Spoliarium".Oil on canvas. It has slight restorations.Signed in the lower right corner.Measurements: 50 x 90 cm.This work reproduces the painting known as "Spolarium", which was painted by Juan Luna y Novicio. The painting, which represents two dying gladiators, was presented by Luna at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts of 1884 in Madrid, where he won the first gold medal. The painting recreates a scene of stripping in a Roman circus where the dead gladiators are stripped of their weapons and clothing. Together with other works by the Spanish Academy, Spoliarium was exhibited in Rome in April 1884. Luna's decision to present this theme, based on the political repression of classical antiquity, was not an isolated one, as he sometimes resorted to stories from the past, which helped him to denounce in a veiled manner the situation in which the Philippines found itself with respect to Spain, which is why this work was praised and replicated, as in this case, by a painter who found himself in the same political and social situation.Miguel Zaragoza was a Filipino painter and writer. He began his academic training by studying at the School of Drawing and Painting in Manila. There he was awarded a scholarship to continue his painting studies in Europe. After receiving the scholarship he moved to study at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid. From 1882 to 1885 he also studied at the Academia España in Rome. A few years later he was awarded the silver medal at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona, and in 1881 he took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. After his stay in Madrid and in different European cities, Miguel Zaragoza decided to return to his native country. He returned to Manila in 1891, where he not only continued to work as a painter but was also involved in teaching. In 1904 he was awarded a gold medal at the World's Fair in Missouri and four years later became a founding member of the School of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines. Today his work is divided between important private collections and internationally prestigious art spaces, such as the Prado Museum in Madrid.

In 1928, Hunter writes from St Paul de Vence to Arthur, hoping to see him while he is in Europe and of plans to visit him in New York:'My dear Arthur,I got a letter from Jeanie today saying you were in Campbeltown. She enclosed your letter and I noticed you were going to Paris and expected to find me there. I am not there at present but at this very charming hotel on hill town some miles from Nice. I'm in love with this country and wish you all could come down here....If it is not too far and you have time, take a run down for a week or two......I hope Marcelle and yourself are enjoying your trip. Am sorry I am not here to meet you and will regret if I don't see you both before you go back....But I'm hoping to go over to New York in the late autumn...I would like very much to have a good long talk about things since I saw you last. Peggy [sic] must be a big girl and forgotten entirely Uncle George.....Well here's wishing you the best of luck Arthur and kind regards to yourself, Marcelle and your mother and if you can manage down here I will be more than delighted.Yours ever, George'In Michael Palin's interview from 2000, Arthur's daughter Peggie says of Still Life with Candlestick: 'It was painted in our apartment in New York and you can see the basket, the silver basket...that he just took things right and left, what he wanted to paint.'Peggie kept the candlestick, wax fruit and silver basket and they were displayed near the painting, until eventually the basket became the only survivor. In 1929 the catalogue introduction to Hunter's New York exhibition at Ferargil Galleries was written by Hunter's friend from San Francisco days, international journalist, Will Irwin (1873-1948). His warm reminiscences of running into Hunter across the years reinforce the deeply interesting and free spirit that Hunter was to his friends and family. Hunter's assured modern handling of colour and texture animates Still Life with Candlestick above the ordinary and it is a fitting tribute to Hunter's six-month sojourn with Arthur, Marcelle and Peggie Leyden in their New York home. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

'FG / 1896'Oil on canvasImage size: 49.5 x 109cm (19½ x 43in)Framed size: 69 x 130cm (27 x 51in)Born in London, Frederick Goodall studied at the Wellington Road Academy. At the age of sixteen, he was commissioned by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to paint six watercolours of the Thames Tunnel. Four of these were exhibited at the Royal Academy. His first oil painting won a Society of Arts silver medal, and he would go on to exhibit his works at the Royal Academy 27 times between 1838-1859. In 1852, Goodall was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy and later in 1863, a full Royal Academician. Goodall visited Egypt in 1858 and then later in 1870.These travels would go on to influence much of Goodall's works, which focussed on many variations of the same Eastern themes. These works received critical acclaim, with 170 of Goodall's orientalist works being exhibited at the Royal Academy over 46 years.
