This work reproduces the painting known as "Spolarium", which was painted by Juan Luna y Novicio. The painting, which represents two dying gladiators, was presented by Luna at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts of 1884 in Madrid, where he won the first gold medal. The painting recreates a scene of stripping in a Roman circus where the dead gladiators are stripped of their weapons and clothing. Together with other works by the Spanish Academy, Spoliarium was exhibited in Rome in April 1884. Luna's decision to present this theme, based on the political repression of classical antiquity, was not an isolated one, as he sometimes resorted to stories from the past, which helped him to denounce in a veiled manner the situation in which the Philippines found itself with respect to Spain, which is why this work was praised and replicated, as in this case, by a painter who found himself in the same political and social situation.
Miguel Zaragoza was a Filipino painter and writer. He began his academic training by studying at the School of Drawing and Painting in Manila. There he was awarded a scholarship to continue his painting studies in Europe. After receiving the scholarship he moved to study at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid. From 1882 to 1885 he also studied at the Academia España in Rome. A few years later he was awarded the silver medal at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona, and in 1881 he took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. After his stay in Madrid and in different European cities, Miguel Zaragoza decided to return to his native country. He returned to Manila in 1891, where he not only continued to work as a painter but was also involved in teaching. In 1904 he was awarded a gold medal at the World's Fair in Missouri and four years later became a founding member of the School of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines. Today his work is divided between important private collections and internationally prestigious art spaces, such as the Prado Museum in Madrid.
